I can't understand this one unless they are planning on using him on the outside. There's no way he can play in the middle. He not only looked lost last year but he got totally destroyed by every blocker he faced. I suspect we could see a switch back to the outside for him.

Mabye if he's moved outside he'll return to being the pass rusher that got him his reputation.
With Willie gone he might fill a void there if one of the young guys don't work out.

It's depth. That's what matters at this point.

I can honestly say I didn't see this one coming. At all.

i see him as a backup to outside. last year..TBC and Brown played in the last game of season

so our depth would look like

OLB: Vrabel-Brown-Mincey
ILB: Bruschi-Claridge-Izzo
ILB: Beisel-Claridge-Davis
OLB: Colvin-TBC-Alexander

missing a few but point is TBC and Brown look to be primary OLB backups

Yes, but if he makes the team depth is no good if you can't play when called upon. The jury is still out on Beisel but Brown can't play inside. He proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt in 2005. If he makes the team, I think it's going to be as a pass rushing specialist off the edge, something he's done well during his caeer.

well this should please Iron Helmet because now our LB situation is better than last year. A healthy Colvin in and old willy out. A healthy Bruschi in at the mike and a year smarter Beisel moved to the Will. Brown a year smarter as well moved from the Will to back up OLB (where he belonged in the first place). So in actuality we improved greatly over last year's LB situation. And we don't even have to rely on a rookie as Claridge and Alexander are both in their second seasons. Look everything is now lovely.

Did you see this anywhere other than KFFL? I still can't find it anywhere else.

EDIT:

Rotoworld now has it:

Chad Brown - LB - Patriots

Patriots re-signed veteran LB Chad Brown to a one-year, $810,000 contract.

Brown, who turned 36 earlier this month, will likely have to earn a spot in training camp. If he does, one of the Patriots' young LBs could be pushed off the roster. It's uncertain whether Brown will play outside or inside linebacker.

Jul. 26 - 10:37 pm et

Remix, can you re-title this "Patriots re-sign Chad Brown" just to make things clearer? Chad was the last Brown I thought of when seeing the thread. :)

I'd actually put things more like this:

OLB: Vrabel-Brown-Mincey
OLB: Colvin-TBC-Klecko
ILB: Bruschi-Brown-Izzo-Alexander
ILB: Beisel-Claridge-Davis-Gardner

Obviously all of those won't make the roster, but I'd still rather have Brown in there at ILB before an Izzo or Davis.

Hell, maybe they could mix things up a bit too:

OLB: Brown/TBC - Mincey
OLB: Colvin - Klecko
ILB: Bruschi-Claridge-Izzo-Alexander
ILB: Vrabel-Besiel-Davis-Gardner.

The bottom-line? It gives the Pats some more options.

I know. Let's all hope they're not negotiating with Donald Hayes and Steve Martin.

Anything to please IronHelmet.

There's nothing like PROVEN talent!

That's the best we could do?

I am now officially unhappy with our linebacker situation.

Acutally, this signing maybe a very good thing. OLB position is solid with
Vet rotation and youth mixed in. OLB is solid now the only real question is now
ILB.

For ILB,at present they have Bruschi and Beisel. That means they really need
one solid ILB contributor for rotation.

There are several young guys that could grab that opportuinity. I wonder if
Klecko would do well at the inside strong LB position? he certaily could take
on those Big Oline guys. As long as he doesn't have to cover one on one
he'd do alright I would think. But there's Alexander and Roach has MLB
experience so he is a possibility? Also Vrabel can also slide to ILB is needed.
The ILB is now the only Unit that is a ? now that C.Brown is signed. IMO

Well, that would give us three LBs that failed last year.

Looks like McGinest is a net loss, unless you consider a 6th round pick a replacement for a 6th overall.

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

holy crap that's funny

and what's with Michael Bishop and Chris Canty visiting??

Chad Brown is a smart SOB--he's a combination of training camp fodder and veteran presence..

...let the whining commence!

I can't imagine in any way, shape or form, that they would be looking for him to play inside again.

If Vrabel stays outside, he may just be their main ILB backup, depending on what Claridge does.

Except this isn't the same thing. Because it will be his second year in the defense not his first. And it's well known that players have a steep learning curve with our defense.

Give him a few more years and he'll be a whiz.

Of course he'll be 42 years old.
