Patriots Rookie TE Lee Smith's Contract Rejected
    By: Ian Logue

According to Aaron Wilson of Scout.com, apparently after submitting his contract for approval to the league, the NFL reportedly disapproved Patriots rookie TE Lee Smith's contract....

So a late round TE's 2+ milli contract raises a red flag, but Santonio Holmes can get a 5 year $50 million deal that only has a cap hit of $2.5 in the first year, and that's not an issue?

Give me a break, NFL. It's time to end the bogus backloaded deals that the Jets are getting away with.

There's nothing illegal about a backloaded contract. Interested to see why Lee's was rejected though. Maybe it was incentives he's not suppose to have or something?

Goodell is probably pissed that the Pats landed AH and OC for a song and dance, and this was his way to tweak them. He's trying hard to get the Jets into the superbowl and pesky NE is making it harder and harder.

I think you momentarily forgot who the Commissioner is.

Just look at the blatant Jet favoring clause in the CBA that allowed the favored Jets to sweep millions of dead cap burden under the table. Can't let a Big Media team run into trouble.

I'm sure it was rejected with a specific reason that was made clear to the team. Goodell can't get away with arbitrarily rejecting contracts without getting the NFLPA on his ass, especially as the CBA has yet to be ratified by the players.

If the NHL and MLB can police it, why can't the NFL?

I hope he makes the squad. I knew he was a special talent and most laughed at my assessment. I sense Crumps replacement will be Lee Smith this season. We have plenty of veterans:) and his loss will be a necessary loss.

Do they? I don't follow NHL and MLB very closely.

I don't expect Smith's contract to hold him up. From what was tweeted last night, it was minor thing, though they weren't specific.

Just a speed bump, but there's still a whiff of something fishy from the office of the Commish these past few days.

You mean that same clause that the Owners all voted on, including kraft?

Yes, Bob is a deal maker willing to compromise for the big picture. He was also under extreme duress in his life at that time but regardless he's a deal maker.

So, all the owners conspired to help out the Jets. Thats what you're saying, that Bob Kraft was just trying to compromise for the big picture, and the other owners were conspiring to help the Jets.

Please, it's not like our impartial NFL Overlord ever worked for the Jets.

The owners all voted on this. SO either they, as a whole, like the idea of clearing old cap deadweight, or there's some sort of Jet's conspiracy that all of the owners are involved in.

If you think its a conspiracy to help the jets, explain how the rest of the owners agreed to it.

Probably seeing if they could get something through the NFL office, and it didn't work. I'm sure the player's agent was aware of the risk, and that they had all already agreed to a plan B.

Because they needed to get a deal done, and there were certainly owners that dug in their heals on certain issues. Players are rarely cut at the end of a season like that, and a few teams did a lot of that cutting. Although we can't say with certainy, this certainly looks planned by a small group of owners. If you truly believe something like that doesn't leave a bad taste in the mouth of owners who have been fiscally responsible.....

I'm a little hungry, could you put some words into my mouth too?
