Ok, just trying to piece some things together here, based on Reiss' last post.

Is it possible that the Patriots wanted to sign TBC to a longer-term deal? As I understand it, he's set to become a UFA at the end of the year. If he and the Patriots wanted to extend the contract, they would have to do so at the end of the year. By cutting him before the trading deadline, he doesn't have to clear waivers and he becomes a UFA right now, right? So maybe there's already a deal in place to extend him.

The dangerous part, I guess, is that once he's cut he's free to sign with anyone. But maybe this was all part of a prearranged deal to extend the contract.

Wouldn't the Pats just renegotiate the agreement and cancel the former contract in the current agreement? Plus, $620 k is not much in terms of cap space recovered. With 3 sacks and money in hand, I don't see how that gamble helps the Pats. Given some of the LB injuries on other teams, I expect he will not be on the market for long.

Does this mean the 4-3 is back full time?

if the 4-3 was back i think we'd have cut somebody other than TBC - his major usefulness is as a pass-rushing olb/d-end tweener, i think his sacks this year have come out of the 4-3... if anything this to me signals a return to the 3-4... maybe they feel burgess is better as the pass-rushing specialist from that position, making tbc redundant? total speculation

In the irony of all ironies, Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan had TBC on Sirius' at about 5 PM central tonight, TBC mentioned how the Pats had a special team, then about 5 minutes into the interview, Tim interrupts with 'breaking news' that TBC has just been cut (I kid you not), and wanting to know what his reaction was. Hard to tell whether TBC already knew that or not, but TBC said "Man I have nothing for you." Surreal to say the least.

I don't believe we'd let that happen to the guy, be totally stung like that on the radio.

He must have known, and when you take the tone of Reiss' suggestion he'll be back on board quickly I'm starting to think this is a contract thing

Boston Globe says 2 former Patriots both in nursing homes have been called for physicals to replace Banta-Cain as we need experience....

more trade speculation - what about Kamerion Wimbley? Lombardi said the Browns were looking to trade him before the deadline, and BB would have a connection to the Browns GM Kokinis, who is a protege of Ozzie Newsome - he's essentially a better, younger version of banta-cain

Pure cynical speculation -

TBC got dinged up in the game or agravated an existing injury. The injury is not a season ender but will keep him out for a month (or something like that) . Given the current injury situation (Taylor , Light , Morris) the Pats can not take another guy out for the next month or so.

The injury prevents TBC from signing elsewhere next week. When TBC get healthy TBC resigns and rejoins the team and gets more money this year. This deal works for TBC since he gets paid for the whole year by being cut right now. My theory has risks to the PATS because obviously the guy can take more money somewhere else right now. But if he is dinged up right now, the risk is lessened provided the Pats pay market rate when he is healthy again.

Your theory is wicked pissah. Much better than mine.

I'm astounded and perplexed.

Wild speculation here. No facts to back it up other than a theory based on events.

Could there have been some pernicious atmosphere developing in the locker room, maybe after the Big Sey trade? Something that made BB move up the timetable for bringing in Seau weeks earlier than planned? Maybe BB tried everything and finally feels that he absolutely had to put his foor down hard on vocal rebels.

Sounds about right to me. Add Galloway and a lot of comfortable vets, including everybody else on the team now, are suddenly not so comfortable.
