Patriots Number Two in the Latest ESPN NFL Power Rankings
    By: Ian Logue

So far all the latest acquisitions haven't done enough to convince the "experts" that the Patriots should be ranked #1, at least not according to the latest NFL power rankings....

Funny seeing the Eagles at #3. They will certainly be a force this year, but they remind me a lot of the 2001 Rams. Lots of great individual players, who may put up the best numbers. But they arn't a great TEAM yet. We have seen it time and time again, superstars certainly help, but you can rarely buy yourself a chamionship.

    #70 Jersey

I think it's pretty standard practice to give the defending champs the number one spot in the pre-season rankings. I'll take number two. For now.

I havent seen very much of this over the last few seasons. Pats have very much returned to being media darlings for MOST talking heads and self proclaimed experts.

The 2001 Rams were a GREAT team. One of the best ever actually.

Im not feeling this comparison at all.

I know they do this every year but having power rankings during training camp is something I always find amusing.

Don't really care much about power rankings. Good for entertainment purposes, but not relevant to much.

Your probably right. But I think the 2001 pats were a better team. A better group as a whole, where the Rams where a more talented collection of individual players. Saying they wern't a good team was inaccurate.

I do have doubts about all the star players in Philly this year blending together and creating that same level of chemistry and talent. It's not always easy to do in year one. Especially this year.

"Some", I'll give you, "most" I'd question, although I wish you were right on this. Begrudging respect, rather than media adoration seems right.

I dunno. I tend to think that a lot of us are still very bitter (myself included) towards the media for 2007.

For them it seems to have gone back to business as usually, while for us, we are likely scarred for life.

The defending champion should hold this until a team proves better on the field.

I live outside of Philly, and their radio hosts today were saying that the Eagles and Patriots should at least be switched, and all the NE did was get older!

If this isn't the stupidest article ESPN has ever written, it ranks right up there
with the worst. The first preseason game has yet to be played and they
    predict power rankings? What losers.

Rankings mean nothing this early on. But #2 is actually quite good. The Packers are the defending champs so they should get the respect until proven otherwise. The fact that the Pats are still ranked ahead of the Eagles despite them getting Asomugha and making a huge splash in free agency shows that the media pundits do give a hefty amount of respect to the Pats this year.

    #12 Jersey

#2 is probably generous if anything.

Great regular season, 1st round flame out.

It'll be better this year, much better.

    Of course, they're from Philly.

I'm just glad Juan Castillo isn't our defensive coordinator.

If ESPN 'experts' supposedly do these stupid lists by last years statistics and off-season signings and moves then the Patriots should definitely be at the top, SB or not.

GB barely made the playoffs and only made the SB because Jay Cutler sucked as usual. The Steelers D is old and I just know if the Pats had beat the Jets they would've easily beat the Steelers(as always) and made the dang SB. But whatever, the Pats hating on ESPN continues...

Philly is overrated -- I really don't see the improvement in the D and Mike Vick as usual will be injured by week 3 and it's all downhill from there or he might just return to old form, where he hardly throws the ball and runs all the time -- until he's injured again.

i dont like that just because the Packers are defending the title, they are automatically number one in the power rankings. they made no free agent acquisitions and lost a couple decent players. packers are in the top 5, but not number one.

Considering their post season performances of late the Patriots should be ranked alot lower than 2...nothing gets Pats fanboy's panties in a bunch more than getting "slighted" in the latest power poll.....OK, going off last season and offseason acquisitions, did the Patriots do ANYTHING to address the lack of fire, intensity, and apparently heart, that this team has had lately in the POST SEASON? Wait, let me check, do haynesworth, chad ochocinco, et al., have careers checkered with playoff/big game brilliance??????
I really get the impression that the majority of people on Patsfans.com would rather the team go 14-2, post huge offensive numbers, and lose at home in the divisional round than go 10-6 scoring 20 points a game and win a wild card game....

I have no issue with the Packers at number 1. They are a very strong and well coached team (with plenty of returning injured stars).

The problem with your mentality is that it takes into account the season prior not the season coming. If the experts see fit to rate sides on off-season acquisitions, drafting, list improvement, team improvement etc for the season coming, then what's the problem?

Jets should be #1 right? Am I doing it right?

This type of idiot thinking is even worse than preseason power rankings.

"Post season performances of late" Talk about stupid logic. It's....2011. Preseason rankings are predictive. If anyone used this dumbness, the Packers had zero chance in 2010. What did they do lately.

All a preseason ranking can do is look at the previous ear, review the debits and credits and project.

What would be a more valuable exercise is to pick the top 10 or 12 and see how they matchup.

Why is it when we have differing opinions from another member here we have to resort to insulting their intelligence? I'm just getting started here, but if I have to deal with being called stupid every time I post something somebody else disagrees it's almost not worth it. I want to talk football when I come here, not measure my manhood.

    Sorry. Off topic.

Here's a local writer that's sold on the Pats.
