Exactly, would be a great fit in the Indy offense. Just what Manning needs, another weapon.

YouTube - Dennis Pitta highlights top 5 TE 2010 draft

Easily one of my fav tight ends out of the entire draft. He might be taken 1st overall by us the guys talent and blocking is pure and natural and he has so much more to grow and at 6-5 245 he still has room to improve

Considering the Pats flushed the TE position this offseason, the chances of him being selected in the 2nd round are pretty high. Doesn't have the straight line speed that some other TE's in this draft class have, but he is able to separate quickly. I believe the Pats are looking for this now more than WR speed. Watson had that but it took too long for him to get open.

    Really?

I thought this guy was projected as a late 2nd round prospect? Really good hands & route running, I'd love the Pats to take him if he's there at our last #2 pick.

This guy is awesome. Watch the East-West Shrine Bowl to see some good footage of him.
Uhhh, why take him in the first round when he can be had in the late 2nd/3rd? I've never seen a mock that had him go higher than the 3rd round.

This guy first came on my radar at the combine and instantly thought of Dallas Clark Jr. BYU runs a spread offense, so he'll be more comfortable in the slot as opposed to in with the O-line. His blocking abilities have been questioned, but he did 27 reps at the combine (TE high was 30), so he's got the strength, just not much experience/technique. His 40 time is .02 seconds slower the Dallas's

On the down side, he did the mission trip like Austin Collie did, so he's 25 (or will be soon). Of course I assume you'd never have to worry about character issues.

I've heard he's a 3rd rounder, and not sure I'd want to spend the Colts 2nd rounder on him given the Colts' needs. If he becomes a Colt though I wouldn't complain. Given how pass-happy the league was last year, and where GM's project it will go, who knows how high he'd go. If you or another team with an established QB & TE need get him early 2nd I have a feeling it'll prove to be a smart pick 2-3 years from now.

Gresham and Gronkowski are generally considered the top two TE's, if there are no lingering medical issues. Both had major surgeries in 2009.

The next group includes Hernandez, McCoy and Pitta. Pitta may be a top five TE, but would be a bit surprising if he was the top one. And you seldom see five TE's taken in the first two rounds. He is a very safe bet, with Hernandez, McCoy, Dickson, and the Graham's to be available with one of the later second-round picks.

Pitta is ranked at more of a 3rd or 4th round value. (#77 overall according to CBS. NFL Draft - 2010 Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com)

Another guy I'd take a good hard look at is Jimmy Graham from the University of Miami.
He's a very explosive athlete (38" vert, 10' broad) with great size 6'6 260, arm length 35", and big 10 5/8 inch hands.
This is the kind of guy you could coach up into a real beast.

Who were the tight end winners and losers at the combine? Check out this article.

There are a number of good looking tight ends in this year's draft. I don't see the need to expend a 1st round pick on one, when you can get about the same player in the late 2nd to 3rd rounds in a deep looking draft class.

Agree with you but I'm wondering if the Pats will shy away from the "explosive athlete" after the Watson experience. Nothing against Watson, but it seemed like Brady had to hold the ball too long to let Watson get open. If Brady had the time, Watson was a serious weapon downfield. More often than not, Brady had to make a decision while Watson was still getting into high gear.

Part of that is with protection, but part of it is the ability to gain separation quickly. If Pitta can get open on slants and dig routes, it may be more useful than a TE that can beat a LB/S 20-25 yds down the field.

Anyway, I with you that there are enough TE's in this draft class to come away with one (or even two) without having to reach too much.

Pitta, and his fellow BYU TE buddy George, is an excellent route runner, best hands of any receiver at the Combine, his blocking is better than people credit, if not up to Grahambo level yet. In short, if NE wanted to incorporate a receiving TE back into the offensive system without giving up blocking potential - Pitta would be my #1 option.

If he's in his mid twenties (25), has he already reached his ceiling. New England might want to draft or sign another tight end if Pitta's their guy.

He's 6'4.5". And he's lanky.. It's questionable how much more room he has to grow. Especially since he's 24 going on 25 thanks to his 2 year LDS mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Improvement? Sure. All these picks can improve.

Reality, though, is that he's going to be older than most, if not all of the guys that the Pats drafted in the last 2 years.. Not sure if that is a bonus or not..

Vollmer is also an older draftee and he made more of an immediate impact for the Pats in 2009. Pitta may have less upside than the other younger tight ends in the 2010 draft, but he also might be able to contribute a lot sooner because of his greater maturity as a person and as a player.
