Seymour cashes in
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

USA Today publishes its annual NFL survey of player compensation, and Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour tops the charts for 2006.
Seymour totaled $24.69 million in 2006, the highest figure of any player in the league, according to the USA Today survey. The high figure was a result of a contract extension signed last April.

Quarterback Tom Brady, at $16 million, ranked sixth in compensation for 2006.

well played senor

Most money earned

Has everyone else seen this? Sorry if it's a repost.

Player Money List

It's the list of how much players earned last season, not their cap hit. I was a little surprised to see Seymour at the top of the list.

This is why Seymour is still on the team. The Pats were willing to

outbid any potential suitors.

2 out of the top 6 thank you BOB keeping paying those who deserve it most

This is always a fun data base to peruse. The Colts rings were pretty expensive from a payroll standpoint - $131M (on a $102M cap). Highest in the league by a substantial margin. 30th in median salary though... That's $29M in cash over cap - what happens when you have 4 guys pocketing double digit roster, option or signing bonuses (Manning, Harrison, Simon and Wayne) that are all being amortized - which is why they were so quiet this spring while also letting quite a few of their own veteran players just walk. We ranked 13th in payroll ($105M) and 23rd in median salary, although in that middle of the pack area the seperations are almost negligible.

Another interesting tidbit. Ty was rumored to be getting $8M of his money from the Chiefs in 2006, but turns out it was $5M. He needs to earn $7M this season just TO EQUAL the 4 year deal we insulted him with in 2004. LOL

Let this be a lesson learned ASSante.... :)

Nah, you can not look at the big cash payout against the long term deal in hindsight terms. You pay at the back end for the money to be loaded toward the front end, and pay dearly. Frontloading the money loads risk on the team. Backloading money loads risk on the player. Whoever assumes risk is paid to do so. In the Pats' case, no amount of money is sufficient sometimes.

But he needed to feed his family!!! Sometimes I wonder how good we would be if Ty accepted the bum deal he was offered here??

That's awesome. What a jackass.

FWIW - The rumor misunderstood the terms of his contract. Ty Law's deal contained $8 million in guarantees (his 2006 $1 million salary and his 2006 $4 million signing bonus and his 2007 $3 million salary).

I'm not convinced Seymour was worth $25M last year.
