I think this is a good deal. $1 million seemed like too much for Alexander, but I'm glad to have him back for his ST play.

Yep. I don't believe this guarantees him a spot at all, but a healthy Alexander is still an excellent STer.

I think he's solid depth. Not everyone is a superstar when it comes to the depth chart.

He is not a waste of space on ST. I agree with others that his spot is not guaranteed, but this deal is good whether we decide to keep him or not.

"eh." more clearly, "eh." As long as he never, ever covers Dallas Clark again......ack, he's just not worth getting worked up about one way or the other.

No one says he'll make the team. At least he'll get a chance to compete for a spot.

Re: Patriots agreed to terms with ILB Eric Alexander on a one-year deal

I think the only reason he was brought back was to give him a chance to earn his spot back on Special Teams. He's been injured in each of the last two years and hasn't given much to the team. And, considering the Pats have Guyton now, Alexanders will be in for the fight of his life.

Though, with Izzo not re-signed yet and no idea if he will be re-signed, that does open up a space on the roster.

true that, but anyone who can't play their position is a waste of space to me............and he can't play LB....bet then again, neither could izzo......

Is Lonnie Paxton a waste of space? That guy hasn't done anything but long snap in years! Gotta have a few specialists lying around.

But I agree with others. This doesn't guarantee him a spot, but gives us a measuring stick for rookies trying out on ST.

Excellent as ST - Sucks as a LB - One trick pony, but below $1M is doable

Re: Patriots agreed to terms with ILB Eric Alexander on a one-year deal

Alexander's position is special teams. He can play that position well.

How well did Washington play at WR last year. How well did Ventrone play whatever "position" he had on the depth chart, WR I think? What about Slater? I suppose Redd was a fine linebacker, and Spann a fine defensive back.

Allocate 6-8 players to Special Teams and be done with it! My list is
Gostkowski, a deep snapper, a punter, Aiken, Slater, Ventrone, and Alexander. If someone can beat them out as a special teamer, they can have the roster spot.

Exactly. I personally think he's a waste of space, but there's not much risked by signing him to this kind of deal. It's insurance in case of injury or other losses, and worst case (or best case) he gets cut in training camp.

Yeah, nice, good deal, get's to compete for a spot.
I think Alexander is a better option at this point than Izzo, because he is probably 95% of the ST player Izzo is, and can play two or three downs on defense during the season without ruining the year.

That said, I hope the LB competition is so tough that it's a struggle for Alexander to make the team. Guyton can play the same ST role, and can rotate at ILB. Woods, Redd, and TBC can play a similar ST role, and can rotate at OLB.

If the season started today, a healthy Alexander is probably competing with TBC for the ninth LB and would be in the ILB rotation. If the Pats draft an ILB or target a free agent, Alexander may be lower than nine on the depth chart.

    Pats usually keep nine linebackers.

    My hopes:

    Adalius Thomas
    Mike Vrabel
    Jerod Mayo
    Gary Guyton
First round rookie OLB pass rusher
    Pierre Woods
    Ted Bruschi
    Crable or Redd
New young ILB or Alexander or Izzo

If we are tendering Woods, and expecting to keep him, I think that you will be disappointed with the future additions at linebacker. I think that

    Vrabel, Thomas, Mayo, Woods
    Guyton, Bruschi, Banta-Cain

would get all the defensive reps. This a good mix of youth and experience.

Seven linebackers is all that take reps, even if a couple of linebackers are injured. My bet is that in any given game, FIVE linebackers take over 90% of the reps.

Crable or Redd would be the developmental linebacker and
Alexander would be the special teamer, who might be considered an emergency linebacker.

While I agree that Belichick could draft a linebacker on Day One, perhaps even at 23, I don't expect it. I think we have ten linebackers that Belichick is comfortable having a roster spot plus Robertson and Craig for the Practice Squad.

In the end, having Banta-Cain and Crable as our #7 and #8 shows considerable depth.

Backup role players are necessary. Maybe Izzo will hang it up. Doesn't have anything to do with a need for talent infusion at LB though, IMO.
