Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Peppers

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

JP is an all pro DE, Cassel is a QB that has one good NFL season. He may be a great QB down the line, but we don't really know that to be the case. If the Pats could pull this off (getting Pepper for Cassel straight up), it would be almost like getting Moss for a 4th.

It would be getting Peppers for a 7th.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

I imagine if any trade for the two players goes down, it will be predicated on both players signing new deals. There is no way either team takes the other player for the franchise tag money.

But Peppers sure would address that OLB issue :D

I was looking at Peppers combine numbers and he ran a 4.68 at 290 pounds. Just to give you some reference that would of been the 3rd fastest time for OLB at this year's combine. Seems like a decent fit at OLB.

I'm wondering if the Pats had an agreement with the Panthers to do the trade and that's why they decided to franchise him before he hit FA. They definitely want to trade him somewhere.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

Cassel would do here in Carolina with a run first team but they have JAKE here. Don't know what they would/could do with him.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

Pat Kirwin knows his stuff and never puts forth anything that isn't solidly-based. I was dismissive of the Peppers talk until now. If he says it's possible, take it to the bank. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, but it definitely could now.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

If this notion is true then BB obviously thinks he can flourish in a 3-4 OLB role so I say let's go get him even if a bit pricy capwise. IMO we are a playmaker and possibly a CB2 (unless Wilhite/Wheatley step up this year) away from having a dominant defense.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

It would be nice... but it brings 2 questions to mind.

1. Who will be standing up and playing OLB?

Ummm...Julius Peppers, seeing as that's why they're trading for him?

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

Some posters think they are smarter than they are, trying to view the possibility of getting Peppers as a negative. BB has forgotten more about football than me or anyone on this site will ever know. Peppers is an all pro DE, and quite possibly the most athletic DE in football. If BB thinks he can play OLB, then he can play OLB. And the age issue, linebackers are like fine wines to our coach, better with age haha.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

i wouldn't mind seeing peppers in a pats uniform :)

If this story is indeed true, it would seem (IMO) that the pats already have a deal or are close to a deal to trade Cassel. It's the fastest way to free up a large amount of cap space that would be necessary to land peppers.

Of course we all know that:p

That is it, broken down to it's simplest form. How can you argue with that?

The guy's specialty is LB's, he took a personal interest in his last new toy (Adalius) and in the several sessions I attended during his first Training Camp in NE, I saw him coaching Adalius personally on every rep.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

It would be getting Peppers for a 7th.

It would be getting Peppers for a 7th PLUS an 11-5 season !

I'm just not convinced this will be going down. Mind you : I was surprised at the A. Thomas signing as well...

I know that Peppers is a pro-bowl type player. I also know that Cassel had one solid year. I think that I would still be happier if the Pats can get some good draft picks. The risk of hitting on a rookie is always there, but the risk of having too many top-dollar players is also alarming.¸

Maybe BB feels that one #1 and two #2s is enough to get the youth injection necessary to keep the ball rolling.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

Also... lots of people automatically assuming they'd try to get him to OLB. Any chance they'd just insert him at DE and go with three studs (though some on this board would argue that Seymour is a stud) for two positions ?

I agree, I think Kirwan is the most knowledgeable writer going. I don't know about a direct switch to linebacker, but Peppers is certainly talented enough to play the elephant position.

I'd still be surprised with the expense and position adjustment, but I was shocked at the terms by which we acquired Moss, so who knows?

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

warren, wilfork and seymore are all studs

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

If we get Peppers, I think the Pats will either cut Vrabel or move him to ILB.

The new defense would either be:
Warren-Wilfork-Seymour up front with

Thomas-Guyton-Mayo-Peppers or
Thomas-Vrabel-Mayo-Peppers.

Either way lining up both Thomas and Peppers outside almost guarantees an improvement in the passrush.

That means the only remaining draft needs are a safety, another CB prospect, and then backups at whatever positions. That could add up to one hell of a defense.

From what I read there's quite a bit of variation in actual roles for the elephant position, some players having some coverage responsibilities, some having very little. L.T. and McGinest were also linebackers, while guys like Dean, Dent and Haley were more DEs, I believe.

Of course I am even less of an expert on the elephant position than on football in general, so take that with a grain of salt.:D

If you quoted (or read) the rest of that question you would notice that I had basically said that if we do that and put Peppers at OLB, it would beg the question why we never converted a pass rushing D-lineman like Green.

If that was something BB had no problem doing, It would have made more sense to just try it with Gree in our time of dire need. Not try out the experiment with Julius Peppers of all people. Acquiring a High priced Franchise player at 1 position, to play another is a riskt decision. Ive seen a poster on this thread go so far as to suggest we let him replace Jarvis Green as our backup?!?!!? What?!?!?!?
If he didn't work out at OLB (which is a definate possibility) I am sure it will be theorized that he will simply replace Seymour after his contract expires. that itself has 2 flaws. 1. he will be a backup or situational guy until then. 2. is there such a pressing need to replace Seymour with someone who will be paid about the same, that we should give up a commodity as valuable as MC to acquire him?

Now that you brought Moss up. If we could get Moss and have it work out we can get Peppers and do the same thing. After Moss just about anything is possible.

Try to convert him to a 2 gap 5 tech? Almost zero chance. Will he play DE in the 4-3 on passing downs? Sure.

Green is no Peppers, he's not as fast and as agile as peppers. If Peppers didn't work out as an OLB, the Pats would most likely have to use him as a third down rush specialist, trade him, or go 4-3 as a base defense. He's not playing DE full time in a 3-4 Defense.

Apples and Oranges. Peppers is an elite athlete, a physical freak. Jarvis is good, but nothing like Peppers.
