On my way to the gym this AM I listened to EEI's new FM station. Troy Brown & Christian Fauria (Mrs Bruschi's illicit hearthrob) were on. They were talking about problem Patriots team mates of the past.

JR Redmond was mentioned but I had tuned in too late to hear the details. Brown said Dexter Reed was an all around bad guy on the field and off the field. Both ex-players chucked about how extremely bad Steve Martin (our 2002 run stopper FA) was in the locker room and elsewhere. Brown reminised about how Bethel Johnson was a legend in his own mind. Always whining that he should "start" and one game Pats in Miami BJ catches a long pass right off then takes himself outa the game with a hammy. Next day Troy said that Johnson was "running around fine playing grab ass with the guys on the field". Brown said he'd take guys like Bethel aside and try to talk sense into them but failed. Said that David Patten had the patience of a saint but finally threw up his hands with Bethel and BB at last got rid of him. The players felt that management was slow on the draw compared to their peers.

Pretty interesting segment, most of which I missed. Anybody else hear this? It's unusual to hear players frankly trash former players, especially guys who were on their own team.

It is a lot easier when you're retired and mostly talking about scrubs.

I heard the very end of it. Troy is pretty candid about this type of stuff. During the summer he was on WEEI with Dale Arnold when Dale was subbing for someone and he (Troy) predicted that Brandon Tate was in danger of being cut 1) due to the new kick-off spot and 2) because he didn't seem inclined and/or capable of learning what was needed to become a good receiver.

He also pretty much trashed Chris Canty, a Pats' early round draft pick of some years ago. He related a story about how one day in camp he continuously ran circles around Canty and it was so bad that Troy went to one of the coaches afterwards and said something to the effect of, "This guy (Canty) is so bad that it does me no good to be going against him in practice." It was damn interesting.

Back in the old Smithfield summer camp days I stood on the grass right next to #1 pick Canty. He was a dwarf and I'm 5'9" 188 LBS Welker/Branch sized. He had really skinny calves. The seemingly big head on a scrawney body didn't help. Seeing Canty stand next to Ty Law who was really muscular was a shocking comparison. Our worst #1 since Ger Schwedes.

I live about 20 minutes, give or take, from Smithfield and I went all the time in those days. I even go back further, to the very early '70's when the Pats trained at UMass Amherst. One of my best friends from college was very good friends with a Patriots draft choice from Attleboro named Dave Hardt (LB/TE) from Kentucky. A bunch of us went out there for a week-end during camp and we ended up at a bar with Hardt and a few other rookies one night. Good standards prevent me from detailing a lot of what happened that night (not to mention a somewhat foggy memory), but it was a night to remember (or forget?). One of my last memories of that night was being at a pool party and seeing Jim Nance (the RB, not the announcer) jumping high on to the diving board and snapping it in half. Might have been because Jimbo had some extra liquid weight on his already ample torso that night.

I was at Phillips Andover in the 60s and saw Nance running in a rubber suit to lose weight.

that's really interesting about bethel. I was wary of him from the get to. So much for the "pats draft highly intelligent, good football players, passionate about football, mature, etc.". This guy was like a little kid out there, totally immature and that's why he couldn't learn the playbook, wasn't aggressive in his routes, etc. It was a very, very, sad waste of a pick.

Hopefully it was Pioli's bust of a pick as he is gone. Hopefully no more busts...please! No more busts like this.

I can understand the bust pick who just doesn't work out but the guy who they should have known, with a little research, was immature as hell...well that's unforgiveable.

I share your concerns. We all read articles about how BB wants players for whom football is the sina qua non, yet we see many FAs and draft picks who run counter to this, q.v. Bethel. Are reporters making up these crtieria or do the Pats brain trust (BB et. al. with BB's ultimate decision) fail to do their homework or do they "fall in love" with potential talent and demonstrate hubris over reclamation projects?

And no mention of Glenn while I was listening. I only heard a few minutes of the segment. Wish someone who heard it all, all the comments by Fauria and Brown could fill us in.

I searched their online site and can find no link to Sunday morning's audio. Searched all the Troy Brown threads. Pathetic since 99% of everything on EEI is SO bad. I gave up on D&C this AM after 5 minutes of beesball yak.
