New York, NY (AP) September 13, 2007:
The NFL has announced that in addition to the sanctions handed out regarding the Patriots video scandal, it has undertaken an extensive review of their historical video archives of the New England Patriots games from 2001-2006.
Though league sources have indicated that results of the review were mostly unspectactular, one game of particular note has been under intense scutiny. A January 2004 divisional playoff game between the Patriots and Tennesee Titans, held in Foxborough, MA with frigid temperatures hovering near zero saw New England coach Bill Belichick taking extreme measures to unfairly influence the outcome of this crucial game. In the waning moments of the game, with the Titans driving towards a winning score, Belichick is seen gesturing a signal to his left shoulder to a Patriot employee operating the heat warmers across on the Titan sideline next to Tenn wide receiver Drew Bennett. Seconds later it is obvious from the Titan bench that all the heat warmers for the Tennesee side are not operational.
After a timeout, the frigid Bennett drops a crucial fourth down pass play to enable the Pats to advance to win their second Super Bowl. The NFL and Tenn coach Jeff Fisher now say that the Titan loss was directly related to the gamesmanship orchestrated by Belichick. Accordingly, Commissioner Goodell has awarded Super Bowl XXXVIII to the Carolina Panthers. A parade has been scheduled for September 17, 2007 in Charlotte, NC to celebrate the belated Panther championship. In addition, the NFL expects to have it's review completed next week on all abnormalities unearthed in the 2004-2005 New England season.
