Overtime change passes for playoffs, regular season could come in May

Not really a big surprise, the owners have voted to change overtime. The team receiving the kickoff cannot end the game unless they score a touchdown. Also, the rule change applies only to playoff games, not regular season games. The Bills, Vikings, Bengals and Ravens were the only teams not in favor of the proposal.

lets say pats vs colts goes into overtime in the playoffs next year
and manning throws a pick to darius butller who returns it to the 35(doesn't really matter where) and somehow the pats only get a FG. is the game over or do the colts get another chance?

Here comes a game simulation question:

2010 AFC Championship:

The Patriots vs. Colts are tied at 28-28 heading into overtime. The Patriots win the toss and receive.

-Later that drive: Brady incomplete to Moss. It is now 4th and 5 at the Colts 20.

Do you: Kick the fieldgoal and hope your defense can hold Manning to a fieldgoal or shut them down.

Go for it on 4th and 5?

Rumor was that the vote was along party lines and Goodel used the nuclear option to procure the neccessary votes to pass the measure.

Pats kick the FG and win in that scenario. The only change is the team receiving the kickoff to start overtime cannot win on the opening drive unless they score a TD on that drive. In the above scenario the Colts did not score on their opening drive, so now any score - TD, FG, or safety - wins the game once that opening drive is completed.

NO, the rule only comes into play if the team that receives the opening KO kicks a FG, once you have a change of possession it is sudden death as before........

Playing under different rules in the playoffs is stupid. It's only done in hockey because games can go on for 5-6 periods without a goal so the shoot out instead of what was a tie works, and the team that goes to OT and loses still gets points in the standings. In football where every game is important its inexcusable to have different rules in the playoffs than the regular season. This opens up this scenario:

Team A plays Team B in the regular season, team A wins with a OT FG on their first possession. This keeps team B out of the playoffs with a 9-7 record while allowing team A into the playoffs with a 10-6 record.

Team A then goes into the playoffs and gives up an OT FG, why should they then have a chance to win the game, when they may not even be in the playoffs if the same rules applied in the regular season?

Change it all the way or not at all. No half assed nonsense.

This will completely change the mindset for the winner of the coin toss. I'm guessing now that most teams will now elect to kickoff, hoping to pin the other team deep, make them punt and the have to only get into FG range to win the game........

I agree 100%. Why not for the reg season when its the same thing? Whats the big deal about having it for the reg season? It should be for all games and would make the reg season OT games much much more interesting and fair.

The official 'company line' was that if you lose in the playoffs your season is over, but if you lose in the regular season you have 15 other games to make up for one loss.

In my opinion the real reason is money - as in television money. Overtime in the regular season puts games over their alloted time slot; television networks don't like that because it messes up their schedule. But overtime in the playoffs they don't mind because it's not going to mess up their schedules; they already have a half-hour or an hour set aside for a post-game show, so all they have to do is shorten that by ten minutes or so.

Television networks want overtime to be as short as possible during the regular season but are not concerned about the length of playoff games. Their money was the driving force behind this decision.

Agreed this doesn't fix anything rather it just creates another problem... Really if they must toy with different overtime scenarios do it in regular season or preseason not playoffs.

I wish they'd do it for the regular season as well. Seems bassackwards to only do it for the Playoffs.

Still, I like the change. If you consider that a team gets the ball on average at around the 25 after a KO, the new rule means that the receiving team in OT no longer has to just go 45 yards to get to the 30 and be in reasonable FG range, but now has to go 75 yards and get a TD. Lengthens the field by at least 30 yards (two thirds farther too) for that first drive in OT.
