This from Mike Lombardi at the National Football Post:

"Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum spoke to the media and gave some indication of his plans for the offseason, which include Vernon Gholston. 'This is going to be an important offseason for him,' Tannenbaum said. 'I have no objective information to say that this guy doesn’t love football.'

What have you been watching? This quote reminds me of a scene in “The Godfather” when Michael nails Carlo for killing Sonny. He tells Carlo to not to insult his intelligence, and Tannenbaum is insulting all Jets fans with his comments. What more can Gholston do this offseason to help him become a better player? He got drafted because he can lift the moon, run fast and tested incredibly well. The offseason is not the problem; playing football is.

Tannenbaum also indicated that safety Kerry Rhodes will be back but did not say the same for corner Lito Sheppard or even running back Thomas Jones. The Jets have many players with roster bonus money due in March (Alan Faneca is due $7.5 million) and will have to rework deals in order to keep this team intact — not because of the cap but because of internal budgets. The uncapped year will force teams to place an internal budget on player costs, and those numbers might not be as high as with a cap."

Tannenbaum doesn't want to accept he has drafted one of the biggest draft busts in recent years, possibly of all time. Or possibly he is afraid that a division rival like the Pats or Dolphins (both in the market for an outside rusher) pick him up for nothing and coach him up to be the player they thought they drafted.

considering if they cut him he would take a 7 million dead money hit to the salary cap I would want to keep him around too!

Except if there is no CBA, there is no worries about dead money because it is irrelevant.

If Gholston were cut, would you try to sign him to a low-cost contract and try him out at 3-4 OLB? Just a hypothetical.

    I would. Let's see what he's got as a situational pass-rusher.

Put him opposite of TBC and give him free rein.

Personally I think he and Chris Long should swap teams. They'd both be better off in the different schemes.

i agree with that. i'd take gholston, but would assume he would be a 50/50 shot of even making the roster

    #87 Jersey

7 million dollar special teamer? Oh my :D

I remember being absolutely enamored with Gholston after his combine. Thank christ measurables aren't the be all and end all in drafting.

Sorry buddy, but the Pats don't have that "mystique" anymore. That haven't been able to take "Joe Schmoe" off the street and turn him into a player since 2005. If he can't make it in Ryan's system, he won't make it in any system. The guy is just a monumental bust that most draft analysts predicted would happen (McShay being one of them). But I'll admit it, I was extremely high on Gholston and thought the Pats blew it by not taking him.

    #87 Jersey

    2005 - 10-6
    2006 - 12-4
    2007 - 16-0
    2008 - 11-5
    2009 - 10-6

That regular season record since 2005 stands at 59-21. Zero mystique whatsoever...

There's no need to cover old ground as we've gone through the Patriots issues in other threads time and time again. I don't think the demise is as bad as some profess.

I think it's pretty obvious he is a 4-3 DE, and some team could have a steal on their hands if they put him in that role. The OLB project is all but over.

This is a slight misinterpretation. The dead cap this season would be irrelevant. Tanny's fans seem to be of the opinion that the dead cap would accelerate and thereby clear the decks going forward. It won't. Amortization does not accelerate at all in an uncapped year. Instead it becomes locked in in anticipation of a cap returning in 2011 or whenever they get a new deal done... Ergo the only reason to cut ties with Gholston this season would be to get out of paying his 2010 salary. They're on the hook for $21M in guaranteed money period so they are likely paying him this years salary whether he plays or not...

They've already told Vernon to start putting on more weight. The OLB experiment is over. He will compete for a 3-4 DE and suspect either start contributing or get cut in 2011.

if they keep him i would assume they would deal with his contract the same way alex smith did when singletary became the HC for the 49ers

That's it in a nutshell. At this point why not one more year? I believe there is little value in cutting him at this time.

and he doesn't bother anyone anyway...what with all the long ,lonely walks down by the pond after practices and the introspective trances he's perpetually in...may as well see if he can meditate his way back into the flow of things

    LOL, true.

He is not hurting the locker room and he has not been injured, plays behind two first round picks...

How long did it take Vrabel to have the light come on?

Vrabel was a sub in Pitt...came here and started..was pretty much who he was from day one here..Goatston's problem seems to be desire...maybe bulking him up is the answer...his measureables are off the chart, but you can't measure heart
