NFL: Adam Schefter suggests five trades that should be made before the deadline - ESPN

    5. San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman to New England for a second-round pick: Merriman's performance has leveled off recently and New England, awash in draft picks the next two years, could afford to surrender one for a defensive playmaker. Some might think Merriman is worth a first-round pick, but he is in the last year of his contract and San Diego would be happy to unload him.

No rumors or nothing involved, just Schefter speculating on deals that make sense to him.

I think he's too much of a head case to play here...

...but we've said that before and it has usually worked out. Maybe Junior could keep him in line.

I'm on board for the experiment. I will let Coach Belichick know tomorrow. ;)

Has Merriman even been productive after his knee injury?

Seems like he's been average since he came back from the knee injury and stopped taking roids...

That deal makes no sense at all. he'd be a part time player in our system where LB'ers need to have cover skills when on the outside. A 2nd round pick for a part time player ... I think not.

Pass on it...they don't him him enough to warrant that high of a pick.

He hasn't done anything since he blew his knee out and he couldn't cover even when he was healthy. No thanks.

Would rather have Peppers. And preferably for one of our many 2nd round picks. :p

You want to take on his vastly oversized contract? Do you know what kind of stats he's been putting up lately?

There would have to be a agreement for the trade to happen, he's not allowed to do that stupid "lights out" dance...so dumb...

As far as Schefter goes, I'm getting the feeling that now that he no longer has the resources to certain information quicker than anyone else back when he was with NFLN. Now with espn, he's become more of the 'say anything and see what sticks, or at least stirs the pot', which is the WWL's trademark.

I'm also getting the sense that those that many in the national media that follow the NFL as a whole know enough about all 32 teams to sound intelligent to casual fans, but when it come right down to it their knowledge is actually very superficial - even though this is what they do for a living and is their full time job.

i may sound crazy but if he give's the pats a real passrush ill take him for a 2th round pick even if it's only for the last 11 gams of the season and the playoff's

look at this year's 2th round picks butler maybe the starter next year and has played pretty good sea bass maybe the full time starter at LT next year pat chung looks like a good run stoper at S but he will not play much this year brace im not sure he has even played yet this year

so i realy dont want to wait two more year's for a 2th round pick to turn in to a pass rusher

but i dont think it will happen the pats love haveing the 4.... 2th round pick's they can trade up in the draft or trade down and get more pick's for next year

Schefter should never have gone to ESPN--he's yacking too much out there. Merriman is a head case plus he is an empty shell of what he used to be. He has been an invisible man with San Diego. Pats have a good amount of picks left, but don't forget we gave up a 3rd rounder for Burgess---that hurts a bit.

I have said it before, but I would love to see Nmandi Asomugha in a Pats uni. I know his contract is huge, but he could have a Deion-like effect on this secondary--plus being a mentor to the younger guys who aren't learning squat from Dean Pees and the secondary coach. Players like this come every 10 years. Like Moss, we should consider trading for him and deal with the fat contract. That way we would have the best qb, best wr, best cb, and best head coach in the nfl. We'd be in the AFC championship game for the next 3 years. I know its wishful thinking, but Moss somehow landed here.

Merriman has been a complete non-factor for the Chargers. In fact he's been that bad I'd honestly rather have Pierre Woods playing OLB in the 3-4.

Couldnt agree more. He had a nice thing going at the NFLN. IN 20 years, he'll be John Clayton.

With regard to the Merriman trade- Seeing that hes done zippo and has a bloated contract, only way to do this deal to minimize the risk on the Pats end is to make the pick conditional based on performance and restructure the contract...

another crappy idea like the one for peppers.A player has to be traded before he can redo his contract. that is a team needs to make cap to first do the trade.

we have a 2-4 million cap and i have no clue why peppers with a cap hit of 16 million or merriman on his big contract year is going to take in pure personal point to cut and redo contracts to open enough cap to make a trade.

We are talking about the top 5-6 paid players redoing their contract to make a move possible. I just do not see it.
