Some of you may have caught me yammering about Robert Edwards starring in Canada now. Well I know the NFL off-season is better than most sports' real seasons... but I personally was amazed to hear of Edwards' success up in Canada (for you guys who have been Pats-watching at least 10 years.)

Anyway, I just found a Q&A called "Run it by Rob" on the Alouettes fan site.

If any of you guys remember him working his ***** off in obscurity on IR for 3 years after "The Injury", and how classy the Pats were to him and he was right back to them, and you want to say thanks, this is a place where you can let him know:

I just sent a letter, saying I did not expect it to get printed, but letting him know that for him to climb his way back shows he had the "heart of a champion..." If anyone else gives a fat fiddler's flatulence about this too, hey, why not drop him a line?

By the way, it's supposed to be a Q&A forum, so most likely your letter won't get printed (unless you ask him something about Allouettes football...) but I bet he does get to read them all.

And led the CFL in total TDs (17 I think). Hey, if things had gone differently, probably he's already a free agent loss by now. Who plays their whole career with 1 team? But what I remember is the days of seeing a human interest story on him every year or so, with him otherwise suffering through rehab for 3 years in anonymity. It may sound weird, but he was a TOTAL Patriots type of player, from what you can tell. PS, the Alouettes are now my CFL rooting interest for this year!

If he hadn't gotten injured we might not have 3 SB's. Bledsoe might have done better as well as Pete Carroll. Kevin Faulk would have likely had not been drafted.

I remember him rehabbing. You also wonder how much medical technology and rehabbing has advanced in just over a short period of time. Wasn't this the ame type of injury Rodney and Daunte had?

I think he tore the ACL and MCL, and destroyed some tendons - but I am going from memory, and not at all certain.

    And nerve damage.

Great post. Let's celebrate the warriors who defy the odds and the pain instead of tearing them down.

Two thumbs up for the post and good for Edwards!

What if we brought him back in Dillon's role? The money would be better, could he produce in a Dillon type role?

i will never forget his rookie year when he was with us

I would love to have Robert Edwards back on the team, though i think he is the same age as Dillon, maybe a year younger. Both drafted in 1997, Edwards in the 1st round, Dillon in the second.

I love to say "that's exactly the kind of guy he is!", but it's not true. I remember him as being fast, having great instincts, not a wuss in terms of power running, but no Corey Dillon.

I think the Pats may see Maroney as the whole package, without need for a power runner, since he does have decent strength and size. Edited to say: don't forget Evans is there in a pinch... and also to say, hey, TJ Duckett would fill more holes than Evans (ability to be the backup featured back in case of injury,) so not out of the question.

So my heart says "yeah wouldn't it be great if there was some role for Edwards here," but there just isn't. And yes, he's well on the wrong side of 30 now (I think he'll be 34 in 07.)

And about the woulda shoulda couldas.... as in, we'd never have gotten rid of Drew, we'd never have done this, that, etc., well, who knows. We do know things worked out very well for us, so it's hard to see how Edwards as a Pat would have changed that for the better. The point is, I just love the guy's heart even in (gasp!) another uniform.

By the time he finally got carries with Miami, I think he'd been out of the game 3-4 years... by the time he got success in Canada, the injury must have been 5 or 6 years back... This guy kept fighting when nobody gave him a shot. I dunno what he could have been, but celebrate what he was, a guy who refused to take "you can't play" as an answer.

    Allons, Alouettes, Allons!

Give him a try, he at least deserves it, might be good for 10-15 carries per game. Might be a good replacement.

10-15 carries a game ? That's about twice what we need from the second RB this year.

I once heard that the injury was so bad, amputation was a consideration. This sounds bogus to me but thought there might be a 1% it was true? Any insight?

Not only is it true, but it led me to find out that Robert is playing with younger brother Terrence Edwards (WR,) on the Alouettes.

How much human interest can one team take?
