What a meathead. He'll likely be doing more damage (to himself and his team) by forgoing the surgery. Oh well.

If I were the Chargers owner, I would do to Shawne what Jerry Jones did to Terry Glenn - Sign some kind of contract regarding injury clause

4 Doctors told him to have immediate season ending surgery - He went to Florida today and apparently the doctor told him to decide for himself since the injury would not effect him that much

    Something is fishy here

Well if he plays and is still successful, this may set a bad example for the future. No one's going to listen to the doctors.

Unfortunately, Merriman if even on one leg hopping about, is better than a lot of the LBs in the league right now.

The thing is he's not hopping about. From what I've heard, he's had this injury for some time, and from the little I've seen of him at practice, he doesn't look bad moving around. However it may be a different story once he starts getting blocked and has to tackle someone.

I guess we could say that one little tweak and that's "Lights Out" for his career?

I don't like Merriman, but this is just silly. Someone please talk some sense into him before he ends his career.

LOL. Well Merriman is an adult. IF he wants to screw up his career and forgo the medical advice of 4 different doctors, that's his priority. Hope he enjoys playing himself into early retirement!

I don't know, he may end up losing the season to further injury if he gets nailed, but he could live with it and hit surgery after the season. His position doesn't warrant as much concern for this injury (afaik) as if he were a receiver or QB.

    :ditto:

Why even bother going to doctors when you've already made up your mind and will ignore any advice to the contrary?

Uhh....didn't all the doctors tell him that it's time NOW for surgery. I heard from another source that he could end his career by playing on it. Why did he bother to go see all these doctors anyway, he obviously had his mind made up.....they couldn't have given him any worse news.

If the team doesn't plan on keeping him, I can see them wanting him to play. From the various posts, it sounds like SD is getting sick of "Lights Out". I do not understand why he wants to play (logically)

He will need surgery. That will cost a year unless he plans on doing it after they lose in the playoffs Jan 2009. However, that makes 2009 problematic so it sounds like a 2010 long term deal not feasible (unless someone stupid like the Raiders step in)

How great can he be this year? A year of recovery circa. 2009 would give better value than damaged goods and limited 2008 production.

Actually, maybe they want him "done" after 2009 because of the money Al Davis would trow at him.

He's a big boy and might think he's invincible..that he knows MORE than the doctors...shopping for an opinion you want...seen that with Reggie Lewis whose wife pushed him to find an opinion that would let him play..the results of that were tragic. It's not THAT critical in this case, but if the career doesn't mean that much to him...VERY sad...wake up Shawnee!!! And when his career ends?? I don't think many should shed tears..he HAS his chance now..

Re: OT:Merriman chooses to forego surgery.

seriously. He not only will not be able to go full speed but he will be putting his future and his big contract that he has yet to sign in jeopardy. The guy has been some what of a jerk so far in his career, you think its not going to go through some o-line men's headthis season to go after merriman's knee on a block. Im not supporting it I just know there are a lot of dirty tactics that go on in this league, factor in the rivalry, I could easily see a raiders linemen do it,

Dont worry fellas the first time he gets cut blocked or crackbacked he will be done and then we wont have to worry about him anymore

No sympathy for anyone who knows full well what they are getting into and proceeds to forgo caution and go full steam ahead
