During the game last night, one of the commentators mentioned that Strahan was technically 2 sacks away from tying LT's club record, but that it was a technicality since LT's first year didn't count for stats. Does anyone know why that is?

LT came into the league in 1981, but sacks did not become an official statistic until '82. This is why we seem to have sack records every five minutes, and all sorts of guys have a shot at the 'all time' record.

Ahh, that's very good to know, thanks!

of course, strahan should actually be 1 more away from the record, since everybody knows brett favre layed down and gave him one when he was 1 away from the single season sack record a few years back.

We also know that LT was a coked-up madman, but why be sticklers.

i just saw a free show from nfl network on comcast about LT. they don't make them like that anymore. he was a beast. playing hurt and out of his mind on coke, he was truly a monster to be feared on the gridiron.

Yes, I do. The NFL didn't start counting sacks until Lawrence Taylor made 'sacks' a defensive weapon to be counted. Lawrence Taylor changed the entire NFL, and it is written about in Michael Lewis' new book 'The Blind Side'.

It is similar to when Bill Russell was one of the first-ever great shot blockers, and the NBA started to count blocks and rebounds after some players made them important statistics that determined the outcomes of games.
