Re: OT: Kurt Warner to retire
Indeed. What a bizarre career though. Trent Green goes down so Warner, who was stocking shelves in a grocery store, takes over. Promptly puts together one of the greatest seasons a QB has ever had (look at his 1999 stats...ridiculous) and won the Super Bowl. Two more outstanding seasons followed, then he started getting hurt and fell into oblivion. For 5 years (2002-2006) he did squat and looked like a grocery store worker again. Then he gets a shot to be the full-time starter with the Cards, and in 2007 has a great year, followed by two more tremendous seasons in 2008 and 2009, including another trip to the Super Bowl (his 3rd). Played his best when it mattered most. Look at his career playoff stats:
13 g (9-4 record), 307-462 (66.5%), 3952 yds, 31 td, 14 int, 102.8 rating
Just for comparison's sake, here are the career playoff stats for Brady, Manning, Elway, and Montana:
Brady: 18 g (14-4), 395-637 (62.0%), 4108 yds, 28 td, 15 int, 85.5 rating
Manning: 17 g (9-8), 404-647 (62.4%), 4831 yds, 27 td, 18 int, 87.5 rating
Elway: 22 g (14-8), 355-651 (54.5%), 4964 yds, 27 td, 21 int, 79.7 rating
Montana: 23 g (16-7), 460-734 (62.7%), 5772 yds, 45 td, 21 int, 95.6 rating
So compared to these other all-time greats, Warner's playoff stat line is substantially better.
I'll miss him when he's gone (especially because I finished 1st and 2nd in my fantasy football league the past 2 years with him as my QB!!!).
