Re: Dolphins news: Ferguson retires

I'm sure those highly priced inside backers are just overjoyed.

Re: Dolphins news: Ferguson retires

The Dolphins' defense was very shakey without Ferguson in the line up. Even though they weren't going to have him the first eight games, they could have definitely used him down the stretch.

Re: Dolphins news: Ferguson retires

I don't know much about the Fish, but is he a big part of their D?

Re: Dolphins news: Ferguson retires

The Dolphins are now weakened but not broken...He will be missed but I doubt they weren't prepared for this to happen since his suspension was announced.

They're going to try to replace him by moving an end (Randy Starks) to the NT position, and the change at D.C. should make this loss a little bit easier to take. With Nolan as the D.C., you'll see a lot of run blitzing, and you'll see Starks trying to get upfield rather than eating up blockers.

If Starks can't hold up at the point of attack, though, Mr. Dansby will really need to earn his money.

Re: Dolphins news: Ferguson retires

Be interesting to see how the D is affected by this.

I suppose he thought that if he was suspended for 8 games, he might aswell sit at home for all 16 :)

Re: Dolphins news: Ferguson retires

With Starks moving from DE to NT for the full season, may we see more of everybody's binky, Jared Odrick, in 2010?

They are going to have probably six players who are starting in a new position on defense. Starks will be in a new position. Odrick and Misi look to be starting as rookies. Wake is moving from a pass rush specialist to starter - maybe unless one of the other back ups win the spot because they are more rounded. Dansby is new in the middle. I guess Chris Clemmons is starting at FS, but I don't know for sure. There are going to be a lot of new parts on that defense.

These observations puzzle me as to why pundits extoll Miami's 2010 D. Compare this wholesale change to Pats changes and Pats rookie expectations. Somehow if it's the Pat's making changes it's a weakness or (correctly IMO) greeted with wait & see skepticism. But not so with the vaunted Phins. Go figure.

Re: Dolphins news: Ferguson retires

Steve Young commented about the draft term "NFL Ready" as BS. He said, "None of these kids are 'NFL Ready'.

Notice how BB goes into the draft with a pretty full complement of players and calls the draft "freebies".

Any team that is relying on a rookie for major contribution is already screwed.
