WILLIAMS DIED IN JAVON WALKER'S LAP

A league source tells us that the current talk in team circles is that Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams expired in the lap of receiver Javon Walker after being shot early Monday morning in a limousine.

Williams, we're told, expired instantly. Also in the limousine were linebacker D.J. Williams and receiver Richard Marshall. Two others who were riding in the vehicle with the Broncos players were shot, but Walker, D.J. Williams, and Marshall were not injured.

Initially, it was feared that Walker also had been shot, but it was determined that the blood on his clothing was from Williams. (We really couldn't think of a more delicate way to report that specific fact, and we continue to feel nauseous about the entire ordeal. We've heard good things about Darrent Williams from members of the media, and our thoughts are with his family.)

We're told that local police have strong leads as to the suspects, and that arrests are expected to come sooner rather than later. Apparently, the bullets were fired by a group of men with whom the Broncos players had squabbled at a New Year's Eve party hosted by one or more members of the Denver Nuggets.

Nothing good ever happens after 2AM

Another tragic thing about this is that apparently Williams was heading down the road of gang violence in his youth but got out of it and was active in the community. You hear so much bad stuff about atheletes but here was a good guy doing the right thing not driving, just trying to have fun on New Year's and some thugs come along and do this. It's just really sad. :(

RIP Darrent Williams, may God take you into his arms and hold his hands over your family and friends during this horrible ordeal.

This is neither here nor there, but my brother mis-reported the story to me this morning when I woke up --- he must have heard "quarterback" instead of "cornerback" --- and I spent the entire day (away from media) believing Cutler had been killed.

Nothing good about this story. Condolences....

ANOTHER "CLARIFICATION" ON WILLIAMS SHOOTING

A reader has reminded us that our "clarification" that Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall wasn't in the limo when cornerback Darrent Williams was shot really wasn't a "clarification" but a "correction."

Here's another "clarification." A league source tells us that linebacker D.J. Williams also wasn't in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Meanwhile, police are searching for a white Suburban or Tahoe with tinted windows in connection with the shooting. Though the police say they have no motive, word is that there was some type of squabble that preceded the incident.

Thanks for showing support at our message board.

After a terrible loss that left many of us miserable, this news only made it so much worse.

It puts everything back in to perspective, and it helped me forget about our embarrassing loss.

Darrent was a GREAT person, and ironically planned to speak to a large group of children about staying out of gangs, and helping out in his home town in Texas this offseason.

He set up many charities, and there is a charity for him now, for his two children. If you're interested, look for more info on the Broncos official message boards, and Denverbroncos.com.

This is very terrible news. :(
