Re: OT:Davis wants to win … just not on the field

I figured Dallas was heading down the same road a few years ago as Jerry Jones is another megalomaniac who appeared to believe his years of watching football made him a competent coach. Dallas hit the skids, and Jones had to relinquish control to Parcells to get him to bring the team back to credibility (not completely mind you, but you cannot expect miracles). Davis' team tanked against Tampa Bay and downward spiraled straight down the toilet bowl and continues on its path to the sea.

As much as I respect the history of the NFL and Davis' role in that history, the Raiders fans will be looking to the 70s and 80s for positive memories as long as he runs the show. I contrast him with the Rooney family with the Steelers. I would like to see the Rooneys stay in the NFL mix as that franchise has benefited from their involvement. As for Davis, the sooner he gets out of dodge, the better off the NFL as a whole will be (excluding the benefit of course of the virtually guaranteed win every time the Raiders land on your schedule).

The real ironic thing about this is he has always been this way. See the late Pete Rosel and Mike Shanahan. The man is a vindictive little man with a low self of steem.

On a similar note RK was pretty close to becoming a medelsome owner early in his tenior and all though it ultimately made Bill Parcells look bad Kraft was wrong to interject his opinion when it came to football with BP. He even admits he had to learn to pull back when that ordeal finally ended. Maybe someone should tell Davis hey you're old go take a nap for a while

Wow! I had no idea it was that bad in Oakland. Davis seems hell bent on driving that franchise into the ground. I find it interesting that this kind of a situation makes the NFL look bad and that the commish is more worried about player haircuts touchdown dances.
I know he works for the owners but the mess in Raiderland is something that needs to be addressed.

I wonder if he is doing this to make Oakland ASK him to leave. That way he can go back to Los Angeles to a future new stadium.

Can you imagine someone in the Pats organization distributing bad articles on BB?

You know something is seriously wrong when the Lions have 30% more wins than your team does over the last five years.

Re: OT:Davis wants to win … just not on the field

NO. Kraft has never been a meddlesome owner. There are 2 occasions people used to reference when talking about Kraft being meddlesome and they flat out are not meddling. 3 occasions if you're a moron.

1 - Siding with Bobby Grier over Bill Parcells. There was a change in the organization to make Grier in charge of player personnel probably because Grier was responsible for some of our better picks, especially in the 1995 draft, but regardless once that change was made Kraft wasn't siding with Bobby Grier he was saying they had to go with the organizational changes they had made. The fact that Grier was right in wanting Glenn over Cedric Jones (the Parcells actually wanted Tony Brackens stuff was hilarious after the fact retconning) doesn't matter.

2 - The Christian Peter situation. Maybe YOU think not wanting a goddamn rapist, who was not only convicted of sexual assault but also lost a civil case about ANOTHER college girl he apparerently raped, is meddlng but I think an owner has every right to say that there's a point that they don't want someone on their team.

3 - Stopwatch at the combine. A completely untrue story people believed was true after Dan Shaugnessey said it in one of his columns. He was being satirical but that didn't stop people who wanted to hate Kraft for Parcells' departure from not only buying it hook line and sinker but also using it in their little anti-Kraft tirades.

Re: OT:Davis wants to win … just not on the field

Sorry, not buying it. Especially since it was Kraft himself that installed Grier, not someone from football operations. If this were true Kraft would never have come on record when Belichick was hired as 'having learned a few things about leaving football decisions to our football operations staff.'

Kraft may not have made the pick, but he installed the guy that made the pick... its meddling either way you look at it.

And please don't hold up 1995 and Terry Glenn as examples of Grier's drafting prowess without holding up the entire draft he pissed away after Parcells left, both the regular picks and every single compensation pick they received for Parcells and later Curtis Martin... guys that were out of the league within three years without making any sort of impact.

Kraft is a phenomenal owner, always has been in fact, but even he himself admits to mistakes he made in the past when he was learning the business, and once he decided to leave football decisions to his football personnel, he went from phenomenal to one of the best owners in the league.

Re: OT:Davis wants to win … just not on the field

That is the reason why Mr. Kraft gets such good marks as an owner. He is able to learn from his mistakes, and use those lessons to move on and become better. He owns up to his mistakes, unlike some others who are always happy to pass the buck to the coaching staff or front office.

Everyone makes mistakes. It's how youi respond to them that defines your character.

Man, can you imagine how sweet life might be if the Red Sox had an owner like Robert Kraft?

Re: OT:Davis wants to win … just not on the field

You took the thoughts right out of my head. Al Davis is Jerry Jones in about 20 years. We got a little sneak preview with the Terrell Owens Bill Parcells disaster. Owens knew he was untouchable because he was Jerry's guy and as a result he showed absolutely no respect for Parcells, opening talking about how he would fall asleep in meetings, and comparing Parcell's to his grandmother saying that he doesn't really know what's going on but you have to humor him and pretend he does. Talk about dysfunctional. Jones cut Parcell's legs out from under him and that's a huge reason he got out when he did. Now Jones has found Phillips who is a yes man and a player's coach, and seems like exactly the kind of puppet Jones wants. It's kind of the old school way of doing things, like how George Halas at one point was both the owner and coach of the Bears, but it has mostly fallen out of style in today's NFL save for a view teams. Both Jones and Davis have experienced great success despite (or maybe even in part due to) their meddlesome ways, but when you're mind starts to go like Davis's has a meddlesome owner can get out of control.

Re: OT: Davis wants to win … just not on the field

The Raiders won the AFC and had two extra 1sts and two extra 2nds from the Jon Gruden departure.

And they still managed to have a league-worst record going forward.

Heck, there even was the occasional good draft pick (Scrabble) or hire (Ryan) in there.

    Just amazing.
