OT: Colts and Mannings contract situation

Re: OT: Peyton Manning Contract Explanation

Yeah, but the Colts would be negotiating from a position of weakness. Any trading partner would know that the Colts were bending over and only wondering how much it would hurt.

They'd be out the $34 million and, on top of that, have to take a lot less than Manning is worth! That's why Brandt concludes that Irsay will just bite the bullet and let Peyton go. That $34 million is HIS money out of HIS pocket. I'd imagine that he has other uses for it...

That could be mitigated by making the value of the traded conditional on Peyton's playing time. Similiar to the structure of the Favre to Jets trade.

Re: OT: Peyton Manning Contract Explanation

When the Colts signed the contract they didn't know Manning was injured or would be out this season.

With 20-20 hindsight it was a bad contract for the Colts, at the time it was win-win.

Wrong.

Indianapolis Colts' Peyton Manning signs five-year, $90 million deal - ESPN

"During his meeting with Irsay and Polian, Manning also acknowledged uncertainty about his specific return to normal football activity as he rehabilitates from the surgery to remove a portion of a bulging disk that was causing nerve malfunctions and pain."

"Irsay originally said doctors expected Manning's rehab to take six to eight weeks; however, sources say Manning still has "quite a ways to go" to be ready for a full practice regimen, let alone play in a preseason game."

The Colts knew full well they were signing damaged goods (with a neck injury too boot). Terrible move by the Colts, and they're going to pay for it one way or another soon. I love it :)

Re: OT: Peyton Manning Contract Explanation

(Obviously, all of the above assumes Manning is not willing to restructure his contact. Obviously, if he is willing to restructure, then all the talk of what the current contract says goes out the window.)

Brandt says the CBA prevents this, then asks why manning would do it?
Not in his interest, gives up his leverage, and he has been hardcore for the cash in the past.

The fact that Irsay and Manning have not been talking does not make a good lead-in for any gentleman's agreement, right?

But yeah, it comes down to release him, or pay.
Brandt thinks he is gone.
It is certainly interesting.
Who'd a thunk it, not too long ago?

I don't think so.

The facts are that Manning was still recovering from neck surgery with no specific date yet set for his resumption of practice when the contract was signed in June. Polian assumed that his recovery was going to proceed normally, which it did not.

Polian either did not think of writing in an "out" clause that would have allowed the Colts to retain their rights to Manning without the $28 million March payment or Condon refused to agree to such a clause; we'll probably never know and it doesn't really matter. That was a major miscalculation and what a lot of folks I know would call "a career-ender."

The fact that all of that might have been "bad luck" just doesn't wash with a guy like Irsay when the hired help, like Polian, is playing around with that much of HIS money.

I would think a trade is worth considering.

Brandt takes irsay at his word that trading him is not an option,
and does not really examine that.
He does reference how much the Raiders gave up for Palmer.

Problem is he has to make a decision on the cash before he can even get feedback on the offers. officially, anyway.
All this chatter has to have generated some curiosity, private conversations?

And, more importantly, teams have to make a decision on Manning w/o knowing how he'll hold up in games.

There it is, rock meet hard place.
A main reason Brandt thinks Irsay releases him.

Re: OT: Peyton Manning Contract Explanation

It is hard to believe Irsay cornered himself like this.

Conclusion is Colts must release him.

Colts $28 million option due March 8th

CBA prevents renegotiations of contracts following the last regular season game of the League Year within which the date is in. 2012 League Year and trading period begin on March 13th

Colts must exercise the option to keep Manning – or not – in a one month period between February 7th and March 8th.

uncertain neck condition
Luck, available for half the price
Manning + Luck = $50 million for 2012
Colts pay him, trade him: $26 million cap hit for 2012

I personally believe it's pretty simple. If payton is healthy you pick him and trade the 1st pick for a motza and then rebuild your team that way. Trade would be somehting like cleveland's 2 1sts. Or pick Luck and pay manning, trade him for 2 1sts 2 2nds and a player. Throw away next season basically and then by 2014 you will have a team with an absolute abundance of talent with 2 1sts 2 2nds to play with a young star at qb and another high 1st rounder as next year your team probably won't be going anywhere.

I wasn't referring to Manning's health, since he would presumably be healthy by some definition of the word if they were trading him, but rather to the Colts' weakened bargaining position as a result of everyone knowing they had to get rid of him and his salary.

And "playing time" wouldn't be the issue; it would be the quality of playing time, about which it would be almost impossible to write an effective contract clause.

Finally, the cases are different as Favre was "old" but not recovering from a specific, career-threatening injury.

You got it! And Polian has clearly taken the fall for the deed with Irsay, whether it was his fault or not. That's the way it works when one of the two people who really know who's "fault" it was is the billionaire and you aren't. "It" flows downhill and the fault is all yours just like the credit would have been all his if everything had worked out.

The only teams that would probably value Manning are win now teams.

Look at the suspect du jour- San Fransisco. If you accept the assumption that they are favorites minus a QB, do you make the trade for 2012 run?

Why would Manning care about their long term future at 36?

What is Manning's objective? Winning another Super Bowl has a different set of suspects vs say making another $90 million.

What does that have to do with Manning agreeing to push back his bonus in order for the Colts to get players or picks from the team they trade him to instead of making them release him to go sign where he wants?
Why would Manning want the 49ers to have to give picks or players to the Colts that they don't have to if he is going to be a 49er? It makes no sense
