I know this is way off topic but I'd like to thank Airforce Pats Fan for showing within their signature the links below about breed specific legislation (or bs legislation). Someone told me a few days ago that there was a movement to ban German Shepards in some areas and I couldn't beleive it. To me this is one of the most noble breeds. My family are huge dog lovers and different members of the family have had Dobermans and Rottweilers. They've all been friendly and playful. To ban a type of breed of dog just because there have been too many idiot owners seems pretty backwards to me. Just my two cents...

Thank you, I wasn't expecting that at all, especially on a football forum... The states right now that are in trouble is Texas(trying to lift the statewide no breed ban allowed), Missouri, Kansas, Florida(trying to lift the statewide no breed ban allowed), and quite a few cities and counties across the country are in the process of banning or trying to ban breeds...(pitbulls and rottweilers mainly) It's becoming a epidemic and spreading widely. Since BSL is being brought up, I would like to take the opportunity to say, please be responsible with your dogs, regardless of breeds. If you are having a problem child, I encourage you to find a trainer or behaviorist and enroll you dog in obedience class. Please make sure your dog is safely "contained" if left outside and be responsible. If anyone is interested, I will be glad to post the cities one by one that are considering passing a breed ban. Thank You and God Bless!!

I have an 8 yeard old 100 pound German Shepherd. We did obedience training when we first got him. We also socialized him with people and other dogs at a young age, and as a result he has the best temperment. Young neighborhood kids walking their own dogs can walk up to mine and they have nothing to worry about.

The ignorance of some people is profound.

Google Rottweiler and Pit Bull attacks and see what you get. Something tells me you'll get a few more links.

Also, I'm sure you can find an instance where theres an attack on a child by a squirrel.

Agreed. Breed specific legislation is horrible. It is so senseless to put down animals because a bunch of idiots thought it would be cute to breed their pits and rotties for fighting. Maybe those owners should be put down instead. . .

I found many....your email service must delete "rottweiler attacks" there have been several in the past few weeks alone.

Not many Yorkies or poodles clamp down on a victim with such force that even a baseball bat to the head wont sway them from the attack. I say that if a dog attacks like that, it should be put down and the owner should do time.

Can you please post the links for me so I can forward it on to my BSL group? Thanks!!

Most dogs that attack someone ARE put down, the ones that aren't, aren't pitbulls or rottweilers... I'll go one step further, I think it should be a FELONY CRIME for the owner if their DOG (regardless of breed) attacks or kills someone. Banning breeds is NOT the solution, going after the irresponsible owner is. If a dog owner knows he could face jail time for his dog attacking someone, don't you think he would be proactive in working with his dog and being more responsible, in general???

We've got a Sheppard and a Pit Bull, both of them rescues from abuse or neglect. Both of them have gone through obedience training, and the little Pit graduated at the top of her class in both classes. To this day, some ten years after training, she still responds to hand commands without having to use voice cues.

Without a doubt, the Pit (Luna) is the best dog I have ever owned. It's going to be a dark day in this family when she dies. My little one learned to walk while hanging off her jowls and tail... he literally hung off her the whole time. She was always by his side, would never leave him to toddle alone. When he (my son) was a newborn and we'd let him roll around on his playmat without a diaper, it was rare that we could beat the dog to taking care of any accidents that happened. The kid would poop, I'd run for a baby wipe, and by the time I got back the poor kid's bottom would be licked clean, just like she would do to a puppy of hers. Yes, that did gross the hell outta me... my point being that she had much stronger mothering and nurturing instincts than killer instincts. When a strange kid takes a run at my dog while we're out for a walk, not a single twinge of fear runs through me, I trust this dog totally, although it took a few years for her to convince me of that.

The downside, I've had to apologize to a couple of neighbors with tears in their eyes when their cats jumped the fence that surrounds my backyard and Luna played with them to death, and I've had to bury countless birds, squirrels, moles, possums, etc. And god help me, I've had to de-skunk her about a dozen times. She loves the black and white kitties. :D

Luna sounds wonderful, a true " Nanny dog"... My rottweiler will give kids rides on his back, and is so gentle with them... It's like he knows his strength, and understands how fragile they are... My rottie is a rescue as well, he came from a abusive situation, and is one of the best dogs I've ever had... He's my "heart" dog, kind of like soul mates..

My dog is still a bit of a baby (shepherd/border collie/husky mix- should be smart as a whip, but is missing the smart genes), so he's not fully versed in knowing his own strength yet, but he's still pretty gentle. He's knocked over a kid or two with his wagging husky tail, but no damage done! He loves to lick their faces.

Adults tend to be more scared of him because he has a ferocious sounding bark. Mostly to people that ring our doorbell (I thought the FedEx man was going to crap himself the other day). But once you talk directly to him and give him a scritch behind the ears, he's your best friend. And he seems to have a sixth-sense about "good people" and "bad people."

We rescued him at 10 months old- he was given up because he has congenital hip dysplasia in both of his back legs. We think he also might have been abused because of his condition. But I had surgery a couple of weeks ago and was in bed for close to a week. When my husband had to go back to work after a day, my buddy Bear did not leave my side- he pulled himself up onto our bed, gimpy legs and all, to curl up next to me and put his head on my shoulder.

All it takes is love, attention, patience, and proper training from the right person, and any breed can be a best friend for life.
