» Curtis Martin, RB (1995-97 New England Patriots, 1998-2005 New York Jets)

» Andre Reed, WR (1985-1999 Buffalo Bills, 2000 Washington Redskins)

» *Les Richter, LB (1954-62 Los Angeles Rams)

» Willie Roaf, OT (1993-2001 New Orleans Saints, 2002-05 Kansas City Chiefs)

» Ed Sabol, Contributor (1964-1995 NFL Films)

» Deion Sanders, CB/KR/PR (1989-1993 Atlanta Falcons, 1994 San Francisco 49ers, 1995-99 Dallas Cowboys, 2000 Washington Redskins, 2004-05 Baltimore Ravens)

» Shannon Sharpe, TE (1990-99, 2002-03 Denver Broncos, 2000-01 Baltimore Ravens)

Has Ed Sabol been a finalist before? Never seen his name mentioned.

I'm sure the modern names will fill most of the spots (Sanders, Faulk, Brown, Bettis) but I really hope that Sharpe and Carter are left out... again...

Only gets harder and harder for anyone who played before the 80s.

why ?? Sharpe was an incredible receiving TE ... and all Carter did was catch TDs.

I'd like to see Roaf get in. The guy was such a great OL for a long time. Definitely deserves to get in if you ask me.

My comments in bold

NFL.com news: Hall of Fame announces 17 finalists for Class of 2011

Here are the 17 finalists (*-denotes senior nominee):

» Jerome Bettis, RB (1993-95 Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, 1996-2005 Pittsburgh Steelers)
Deserving but not 1st ballot
» Tim Brown, WR/KR (1988-2003 Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders, 2004 Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
Belongs
» Cris Carter, WR (1987-89 Philadelphia Eagles, 1990-2001 Minnesota Vikings, 2002 Miami Dolphins)
Belongs, ahead of Brown too
» Dermontti Dawson, C (1988-2000 Pittsburgh Steelers)
Belongs
» Richard Dent, DE (1983-1993, 1995 Chicago Bears, 1994 San Francisco 49ers, 1996 Indianapolis Colts, 1997 Philadelphia Eagles)
Step below HOF caliber
» Chris Doleman, DE/LB (1985-1993, 1999 Minnesota Vikings, 1994-95 Atlanta Falcons, 1996-98 San Francisco 49ers)
Does not belong
» Marshall Faulk, RB (1994-98 Indianapolis Colts, 1999-2005 St. Louis Rams)
Belongs, and should be 1st ballot
» Charles Haley, DE/LB (1986-1991, 1999 San Francisco 49ers, 1992-96 Dallas Cowboys)
Not HOF caliber, very onedimensional
» *Chris Hanburger, LB (1965-78 Washington Redskins)
Was excellent, but may be left out because of annual limits
» Cortez Kennedy, DT (1990-2000 Seattle Seahawks)
A step below HOF caliber IMO
» Curtis Martin, RB (1995-97 New England Patriots, 1998-2005 New York Jets)
Belongs. Ahead of Bettis behind Faulk
» Andre Reed, WR (1985-1999 Buffalo Bills, 2000 Washington Redskins)
Behind Carter and Brown. But deserving
» *Les Richter, LB (1954-62 Los Angeles Rams)
Before my time
» Willie Roaf, OT (1993-2001 New Orleans Saints, 2002-05 Kansas City Chiefs)
Absolutely deserving

» Ed Sabol, Contributor (1964-1995 NFL Films)
Yeah, whatever
» Deion Sanders, CB/KR/PR (1989-1993 Atlanta Falcons, 1994 San Francisco 49ers, 1995-99 Dallas Cowboys, 2000 Washington Redskins, 2004-05 Baltimore Ravens)
1st ballot lock
» Shannon Sharpe, TE (1990-99, 2002-03 Denver Broncos, 2000-01 Baltimore Ravens)
Half a TE IMO, because he couldnt block to save his life, but for what he was asked to do, he did it well. Deserving because of the pass happy era, would have been JAG in the days when TEs needed to block

That's quite the list, and only 5 will make it to the final round of voting. I think Faulk and Sanders are the only sure things. I'd like to see Roaf make it as well, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Ed Sabol?

Sabol over Tagliabue?

.

Ed Sabol?

Sabol over Tagliabue?
Absolutely.

Sabol is the greatest filmmaker of any and all sports. He has really changed the NFL for the better with NFL Films.

Tagliabue's legacy will unfortunately be that although he pushed through the last CBA, it was done in a fashion that led to the inevitable impasse that we now have between the owners and the NFLPA.
