Osi Umenyiora will probably leave New York Giants - Sports - The Boston Globe

He's obviously done in New York and we need to continue to get some more defensive lineman, why not him? Of course, this is based on if he's willing to not try and "break the bank" persay, I say we take a look at him.

Belichick loves taking veteran players thats played well against his teams. He did the same thing with an out-of-gas Shaun Ellis last year, I think Osi would bring much more than Ellis did. Him and with Chandler on the opposite side could be an awesome pair. Seeing as to most of us wanting to take a swing at Babin when he was released, whats your take on this guy?

Should BB take a whirl at him should he become availible?

    Why?

He sucks playing the run. Not worth the $$$. I'd rather have Rob Ninkovich.

Osy is overrated imo. Not bad by any means, and probably worth kicking the tires on.... but...

Now, JPP on the other hand....

I'd rather use our available cap on our own FAs; we have several important ones.

Osi would be a good situational pass rusher. Same thing for Tuck, I think he's done in NY. If we can get those guys in for cheap and put them in a backup role, then Im ok with that. Otherwise I'd rather have younger guys.

I doubt wither one will sign for a backup role.

I would rather have a defensive end that can set the corner and kick inside and press the pocket. Someone like Red Bryant of Seattle. Muhammad Wilkerson of the Jets.

Osi probably wants $10 million a year and won't appreciably improve the defense. I'd rather they re-sign Welker for that kind of money.

We have to take care of our FA first. If any 2+ of Welker/Vollmer/Talib are re-signed it'll be hard to get a big money FA. Even if not, I don't see us breaking the bank for a one dimensional player.

If we do make a splash I'd hope it's for a safety or CB, though I don't know who's available.

He's also lost that quick first step as a pass rusher.

The Giants have a ton of FAs and a big issue about who they have to focus on keeping. The guy I would target if I could spend any money at all would be Kenny Phillips. He's been banged up a lot, but when healthy he's been quite good when paired with Antrel Rolle, and I think he would be a great complement to Devin McCourty, and a huge upgrade over Gregory. It's a long shot, but there's a decent chance the Giants will let him walk, and with his injury history he may not command quite as much money on the open market.

The irony of the Kenny Phillips linking is that he was likely to be a Patriot had we not lost the 31st pick that year.

Osi would be good for the defense on third down, but you have to think that the reason Osi and the Giants are at odds is that Osi wanted some asinine contract. I think our pass rush is addressed with a specialist in the draft unless Ansah falls.

I'd rather we attempt to bring Seymour back, I see the Raiders cutting him after the season. Having a chance to win could revive him for another 2 seasons.

Seymour's made it rather clear that he doesn't want to play here again. I'd welcome him, though. It would mean that we could transition back to the 3-4.

I don't know about Osi in particular, but his is the kind of guy I'm hoping the Pats would sign. Not necessarily to be a starter, but a key rotational guy and depth. The key would be finding the guy who would be willing to adjust his personal goals for one that fits the need of the team. That means being willing to adjust your playing time and salary expectations. Maybe it would mean bringing Andre Carter back

The point is that this team is good enough now that what we should be doing in FA is fine tuning, upgrading and creating depth. I think we'd be OK bring back Scott, but if we can upgrade him....even better. We need more depth on the DL, DB's and WR. It's a luxury to be looking to upgrade decent players.

Osi told ESPN the other day he sees himself as a starter in this league.

I think Ninko is better at this point.

Amazing what a couple of years can do to a guy's burst in this sport. That whole DL is just off its game. Since they never had that great a backfield they just can't win games any more. Everybody keeps waiting for that "Eli Magic" to kick in. Errr, I don't think so.

And this is why I never could accept the "Eli is a HOF QB" argument. Mostly his numbers just don't support it. He's had two good runs - very brief but very good runs, and that's about it. Jeezuz, that makes a HOF career? Compared to Tom, Peyton, Brees and Rodgers he is really sub-par. He's still a very good QB but he's not up to the level of the others.

What Pats fans fear about Eli is his luck. I'm sure the Lakers used to fear that little Leprechaun thing too as the Celts had a lot of luck in their runs against the Lakers. But just as all lucky runs end, even that GREAT run ended in the eighties. Eli's luck will run out too. Don't fear the luck - beat it. That would be nice but this year there is no shot as Lucky Eli probably won't even see much more than the golf course in January.

Can you believe this crap? We only match up with that punk when Gronk is on one foot and we have no press coverage guys?

But Bill doesn't really covet one-trick-ponies does he? I think he likes the Swiss Army Knives like Ninkovich more.

the money can be used elsewhere....I would prefer spending the money on our own FA and then investing in a collapse the pocket type of DT to pair with Wilfork. This would open up alot of opportunities for our DE and LB. if we can get to a point where we only have to send 4 guys that would be the best scenario......

Was't Osi out for good money last year? I think he would demand too much money to be worth it as a situational pass rusher and back up. I would also prefer to pay Vollmer and Talib first.

What I really think our dline needs is a DT that can play decent against the run but pass rush good. We need to destroy the pocket from the inside so qbs can't step up in it.

Never gonna happen. This is the same guy that wanted out of the contract he dined after 2 years. He has grudgingly played those last 2 but not quietly.

Have no doubt he could add something to the defense if he came here. But think about it people. If it was about the championships then why leave NY? Make no mistake its about his last contract and he is looking out solely for the pay day. Willing to bet he will play for the worst franchise as long as there is tons of money involved.
