Re: Lua Released as Well

What I decry, Mr. Moderator, is why the players drafted by the Pats in 2007 were complete duds and teams like the Giants had a superior draft.

Mwahahaha. The biggest reason those draftees stuck with the Giants was because the rest of their roster sucked so much or was so depleted at those positions, they HAD to make the team. Let's be honest, the first 35-38 spots on the Patriots roster were pretty much set, no chance of draftees making a big impact, unless they are drafted in the 1st or 2nd round like Meriweather. Same thing will go this year: unless the Patriots decide they need to stock certain positions with fresh talent, only the guys drafted in the 1st and 2nd round have a decent of sticking around. Everybody else can be considered a project. Unless a player comes in and blows everyone away by his actions in the various "team activities" and camps, he has only a slim shot at making the final roster.

Boy that 2007 draft was great, all that combine work, scouting, etc and 1 draft pick ..

Yeah, those losers Welker and Moss didn't help at all!!!!

Seriously, why does anyone look at last year's draft and measure it by players they picked, not what they got for the picks they dumped? They traded out of the early rounds almost entirely. BB was on WEEI the day before the draft and said that guys were going to be picked on day 1 he graded as undrafted free agents.

Oh yeah, the 2008 draft where they have high picks? It is also a product of draft day 2007.

The Pats wanted nothing to do with the 2007 draft. Looking at the results after year 1, I would have to agree with their assessment.

The Giants had rookies who played well (though not amazingly so) due to open roster spots and playing time opportunities. After getting Moss and Welker, the Pats roster was pretty much set.

#1 Meriweather
#1b Pick #7 this year (how you liking that?)
#2 Welker
#3 Pick #69 or so this year (better than anything available in 2007)
#4 Moss
The rest ... a bunch of flyers that they never intended to take up a roster spot unless they turned out to be an unexpected gem or there were massive injuries.

Unfortunately the league forces teams to get down to 53 players. There just wasn't any second day players in 2007 that the Pats thought were worth a roster spot (cutting an established player). Hard to argue with their track record of talent evaluation.

Good post; however, I believe this draft is stocked with talent and will allow some very good players to be had in the late rounds that would be able to make a roster spot on the Pats.

Re: Lua Released as Well

Fear the 4-7!

:) LOL....very funny......that's right!!!!.....who needs linebackers when you have a secondary like the NE Pat..... .........ummmm.......never mind.......

Re: Lua Released as Well

When a 5th-7th round draft pick makes a significant contribution to his team as a rookie, it generally says more about the team's lack of talent and depth above him than his actual skills as a player. The reason why these guys fall so far is because they're usually projects who aren't ready to make immediate contributions at the NFL level.
