Great stuff. Good post.
Bears repeating...
"Patriots beat writer Doug Kyed pointed out to me that the Patriots structured the deals of their free-agents-to-be in a way that would qualify for draft pick compensation. Because the Patriots technically declined the options of Revis, Brandon Browner, and Vince Wilfork, all three should be eligible for draft pick compensation. Revis’s hefty deal with the Jets will likely qualify the Patriots for another third-round pick.

If the Patriots had structured those deals in a more traditional way, they would have had to release Browner and Wilfork (if not Revis as well), which would have prevented New England from claiming any compensation when those players signed elsewhere."

Shhhh! Don't repeat it! As soon as the competition committee hears that the Patriots have been succeeding by doing something smart, they'll change the rules!

Can all those other teams really be that stupid?

Ummm...Probably, especially the Jets.

Heck, one year they took advantage of the rules by, IIRC, only signing players who had been released by their former teams.

It's amazing to think that for pick 126 in the 2013 draft, he got 2 years of elite cb play, the 97 pick in this draft and probably the 98 next year, and Michael Buchanan.

Multiple teams manipulate the comp system, including the Ravens and Packers. The Patriots should be safe with this one.

Multiple teams had their own version of "spygate" going on too. Only one team got penalized. When it comes to the current commissioner, never assume the rules apply equally to all teams.

Since we're talking about a perfectly legal maneuver, there's no penalty involved. The issue is its continuance moving forward. Furthermore, since the comp pick stuff is based in the CBA, it's not something that Goodell can just rule on as if he's the only arbiter.

Wonder how long before the NFL changes the rules so that not picking up an option counts as being cut for the purposes of determining compensatory picks.

Something something integrity of the game...the New England Patriots will forfeit their first round pick in the upcoming draft. I hope not, but it sure as hell would not shock me.

Something something can't possibly happen.

You seem to be under the misguided belief that if Goodell penalizes the Patriots in a way which is technically not allowed anyone but the Patriots and their fans will care. Do you really think there are enough owners in the NFL willing to stick their necks out for Kraft that Goodell would be blocked? The entire AFC wants to see us knocked down a few pegs and I doubt many in the NFC would really shed a tear. They are not smart enough to recognize the precedent being established which may hurt them someday. They just see New England being penalized and mumble something about cheaters getting what they deserve.

Bills must be glad they have Watkins and aren't stuck with bums like Mike Evans or Odell Beckham, Jr., along with this year's first-round pick. Can you imagine how much they'd regret that?

Realistically if your going to award comp picks why shouldn't they take into account all avenues in which you acquire and lose talent. Until they wise up though BB is pretty smart to manipulate it as other teams do as well.

And people think BB was crazy for letting Revis walk. We got an affordable 1 year rental, won the SB, and get a 3rd round pick to boot. He was never coming back.

3rd round comp pick + another high round pick from the Jets due to tampering. The Jets just don't know how much we appreciate the gifts they continue to give us.

No, I'm under the common sense belief that the Patriots haven't violated the rules and aren't subject to punishment. Because that's the fact, Jack.

Yes perfect trifecta, 1 yr rental, SB win, 3rd round pick and Revis wanted out so Thank You.
