OLD NEWS? Givens to be released.....

It was reported on rotoworld.com and they were talking about it on WEEI a bit today during Dale and Holley.

Rotoworld link:

Rotoworld didn't quote an article as saying Givens would be released. THey quoted an article that said Givens might not be ready for week 1.

Then rotoworld stupidly assumes that rather than PUP Givens, the Titans will swallow the cap hit of lat year's big signing bonus. Rationale for this ridiculous move: The Titans have plenty of cap room. What? If the Titans have plenty of cap room, why would they cut the guy? They need to save a year's salary so badly that they can't wait to see if Givens is healed. In fact, the article doesn't say that Givens won't play this year, only that he is not expected be ready to play in September. Even that is a stretch. Opening day is almost seven months away.

What rotoworld actually said:

David Givens (torn ACL) is not expected to be ready for Week 1 in 2007.

Even if Tennessee pulls off re-signing free agent Drew Bennett, the club is expected to add wideouts in the draft and/or free agency. With the Titans a projected $37 million under the salary cap, it won't be a surprise if they're willing to take a potential cap hit to part ways with Givens.

The source they link to has nothing about Givens being cut. This fact of course would not stop WEEI from reporting that the cutting of Givens is a done deal.

this is a non-story. There's no way they cut Givens. Lock the thread?

Wasn't there a certain member who said this a week ago?

Yeah, that's right, this members' name begins with 'pats' and ends with '1'. :D

Well then you were just as wrong then as you are now. No way Tennessee cuts Givens, it just makes no sense. Now if Givens lays another goose egg this year (quite possible, given the extent of the injury he will be returning from), then I could definitely see them cutting him in '08.

What right do you have to make that request? The poster didn't just make it up. He has every right to discuss whatever he wishes.

That's a heckuva one year salary he got -

I'm not sure what he's due for salary this year but it's not tough to understand how a team would want to save real money knowing that in terms of cap money (not real money) they are going to take a hit. It may well be a question of being $31 million under the cap rather than $37 million. Not a huge deal in the scope of things for the Titans, especially if the owner would rather keep Givens salary in his pocket for this season and all others.

Wherever Givens lands he's back in a contract year as no one is going to committ big $$ to injured goods.

So does he do it here where there is opportunity and he knows the system - but also knows the system does not result in big numbers? Or does he do it elsewhere.

Seeing as he got a big contract after being here before if I'm givens I seriously consider coming back to NE

After giving Givens all that money, Tennessee would be too embarrased to

cut him after only one year.

Heard that Givens ACL will not allow him to return for game one and he is expected to be cut.....

link??? i doubt the titans would cut givens especially with bennett hitting the market

yeah i just dont see this happening
if it does, and he could be had for a decent price cuz of his injury, id pounce on him
the titans best receiver goes by the name of brandon jones anyway

You can not cut a player if he is injured. The Titans would have to come to some sort of injury settlement with Givens.

That only applies to an injury within a season. After the season is over you can cut for whatever reason you like.

Either way, no chance Givens gets released, silliness.

If they liked what they saw of Givens before the ACL, I agree that it makes no sense to cut him. If they had a big case of buyer's remorse before the injury, though, it's another story. Remember that he only managed 8 catches in 5 games and a major knee injury isn't going to help matters.

He got $8M up front, so the dead cap would be over $6M...His 2007 salary is listed on the NFLPA as $2.5M.

So the Titans would have paid $8.8M for a handful of games in the beginning of 2006 before they even installed their first round QB. No wonder they get in cap trouble in Tennessee, and no wonder Reese got canned.

I'd take him back just for comfort provided he could be cleared to play in time for the 2008 playoffs...

Don't be so sure.... all bets are off in a new CBA NFL where teams might not view having "only" $31 million in cap space all that debillitating.

Yes, Givens got $8 million in a bonus to play last year.

If he's cut he doesn't get another penny. And his cap hit - that is dead cap money - would be $6 million.

Now the cap is just an accounting tool - its not real money. The only way Bud Adams loses more money on Givens is by keeping him on the team.

Furthermore, it's not inconceivable that Adams might not be so keen on spending the $37 million in cap space he currently has. Having the excuse of another $6 million in dead cap money can allow him to keep even more $$ in his pocket without actually being perceived as cheap.

The fact that Givens is injured right now might be the perfect excuse for Adams to keep more than $8 million in his pocket when all is said and done, given Given's (heh) 2007 salary and the cap hit he "prevents" Adams from spending.

So is Givens, with his injury, a worthless player? Absolutely not.

But is he worth ANOTHER $8 million to Adams? Probably not... (not that Givens gets all that money but that's the reality if you're Adams.)

So if you stop and think about it, its not silly at all. In fact, if you had an option of holding onto an extra $8 million, you might be silly enough to keep it as well.

:)

But he wouldn't be getting money because he would ahve to pay Givens an injury settlement.

[Repeating here] No they wouldn't, injury settlements are only necessary for an injury within a season.

Guess I missed that.

Except that Givens was injured DURING the season. He can't be cut while he is still rehabbing from the injury. He has to be cleared, physically.

The Pats had to reach an injury settlement during with Matt Shelton, who was injured in pre-season and then released in December.

Don't teams usually take out insurance policies on higher priced players in case of injury that are called upon to pay the injury settlements?

I'd think that in the case of Givens they protected their investment and covered themselves, though none of us would know what the settlement does or doesn't cover for team/owner liability.

They were idiots to sign him anyway. Brandon Jones is a STUD. He got injured halfway through his rookie year, which is probably whey they were a bit worried, but WR was hardly that team's weakness.

I actually wouldn't mind Drew Bennett. He's similar to Givens, ableit maybe a bit taller.
