Posted at 11:33 a.m.] An oil rig has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 12 people overboard and one missing, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.

Rescue attempts are under way for at least 12 people, Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards told CNN. 13 people were on board the rig total, Edwards said, noting 12 have been accounted for, but one person was missing.

The accident took place 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana on the Vermilion Oil rig 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy.

The Coast Guard has multiple helicopters, an airplane and several Coast Guard cutters en route. It's unknown if there are any injuries.

[Posted at 11:43 a.m.] U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough tells CNN that all 13 workers involved in the rig explosion are accounted for, but one person is injured.

Lets all hope this company followed safety regulations, and we dont have another blowout.

Lets also hope they find the one missing person alive!

If it is BP that would be the 4th environmental disaster in 5 years...

Just hope all safeguards were not compromised for the benefit of the bottom line..

    good? news...

Jindal said that Mariner has told him that all seven wells have been closed off and that what is burning now is from fuel in storage, and not from an active leak.

It was overturned by a judge, appealed, and overturned a second time. And fought against by all sorts of Republicans. Because, of course, it's regulation that's the problem, doncha know? Amazingly, the judge said there was little justification for it. Oops. Must have been an activist or something.

    huh?

    somehow this is Obama's fault?...disgusting.

anyway, this rig was in 350 feet of water, and had SEVEN wells, all of which shut down and are not leaking.

    good news...

aren't you going to congradulate Obama for plugging all 7 wells?

Wait, so you're for increased regulation? Yes or no. I'd like you to go on the record here. Cause it sure comes off like your disgust is a product of your own confusion.

To be clearer on this....since I seem to have misinformed you on the moratorium.

from the CNN article: Oil platform fire reported in Gulf of Mexico - CNN.com

The Obama administration tried to impose a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling in the wake of the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon in April, but the ban is currently in legal limbo.

A group of companies that provide boats and equipment to the deepwater drilling industry sued to overturn the ban and won in June.

The government tried again in July, imposing a new moratorium and asking for the suit to be thrown out. A federal judge refused this week to dismiss it.
