    What is WRONG with people???

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Aug. 13) -- Longshot U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene was indicted Friday on two charges, including a felony charge of showing pornography to a South Carolina college student.

A Richland County grand jury indicted Greene for disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity - a felony - as well as a misdemeanor charge of communicating obscene materials to a person without consent.

Because the rightists here, well aware that there's a heavy dose of racism on the political right, and well aware that the right champions policies that perpetuate institutional racism, like to go "nut uh you!"

    We've been over this before...

I'll leave the Mrs. to respond to your question to the Mrs., but I'm not exactly sure what the "southern twang" is supposed to signify here.

Does that mean you're saying she's saying she's mocking southern states? Or is that you associating a southern twang with racism? Or what?

Seriously I just don't get the implication, spell it out, will ya?

As to Greene, here's my response for my part:

    - He started out a weak candidate, and nobody would be surprised to find that his primary victory was engineered by the Republicans, by voting in droves for a weaker Dem primary candidate.

He polled heavily from Republican strongholds - from people, in short, who will vote R in the general election.

    - He already had pending legal action against him; that was a part of his weakness as a candidate

    - Evidently, he's got more against him now, stemming from a charge that got rolling the day after the primary

And you're convinced it's about... race?

I realize this will prolly kill his chances of victory, but I think I'd still consider voting for the guy if I lived in S. Carolina MrsP.

Those laws MUST be state laws. I don't see anything wrong with pornography as long as it doesn't incude children.

If I want to show another adult some porn, what's the big deal? The student was an adult, so all she had to do was express her disgust. What right does it violate?

Now, if Greene was teaching the student, then the school should have rules against student/teacher relationships, but that's as far as this issue should have gone.

Doesn't make him a bad guy to me. If I worked at a college, I'd be tempted to flirt with the students all the time...what heterosexual man wouldn't be?

If a man "showed" you some porn on a computer, do you believe that should be unlawful at all....never mind a felony?

After all, PORNOGRAPHY is completely legal.

All depends on the details, I think -- as is usually the case. Also depends on which law you're referring to.

If it's "communicating obscene materials to a person without consent," I'll go back to the question of what the details were. I understand a law against just walking up to strangers and sticking a pornographic image or video in their face. Don't think it should be a felony, though.

Otoh, "disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity" sounds ridiculous to me.

Thing is, I don't make the laws....neither do you. Apparently, much to your own disgust, the state of South Carolina has a law which protects 19 year old college girls from having strange 31 year old men come up to them in the school library and surprise them with pictures of naked men and women in the middle of a sex act and then suggesting he come over to her house.

And ya know what, while you disagree, and that's your right, I'm ok with that law - simply because if I had a 19 year old daughter that was off at college I'd really not want a much older adult male thinking it was well within his right to accost her while she was studying with unwanted and uninvited advances and dirty pictures. Nor would I want it to BE his right.

If you would feel differently about your own daughter (should you have one) well, that's your right - although I must say I'd find it a bit strange.

Then you've got a new hero....cool. Good on you and Alvin Greene. Maybe he'll get elected after all.

    A grown up one?

Sure it is....but virtually all 50 states, as well as The Federal Government, have similar laws on the books making it illegal to SHOW it to anyone else without their consent. (Although the laws are seldom enforced they do exist and are judged on an individual, case by case, basis and sometimes depend on what type of porn is being waved under what unsuspecting nose.)

It's an individual's right to look at it - it's not their right to force someone else to look at it.

Every state and the federal government have obscenity statutes, and they all read pretty much the same," he says. "It is very rarely enforced anywhere."

The law in the Greene case is section 16-15-0305, (A)(3) of the South Carolina code. It is a crime if a person "publishes, exhibits, or otherwise makes available anything obscene to any group or individual."

But Hansen says that the federal government, which has a similar law on the books, would not prosecute Greene if the images he allegedly showed McCoy depicted "normal heterosexual sex." Hansen says that in fact, federal obscenity cases are so rare that there have only been a dozen or so in the last decade -- reserved for categories like bestiality and extreme violence.

But here's the catch: obscenity laws are applied differently in different states because, as the South Carolina statute puts it, the definition of obscenity is based on "contemporary community standards." For material to be legally obscene, it must fit three categories based on contemporary community standards: it must be "patently offensive;" it must appeal "to the prurient interest in sex;" and it must "lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value."

I'm suprised to hear you'd have even considered voting for the guy in the first place, PR, his recent felony charges notwithstanding.

A 31 year old unemployed man with an involuntary discharge from the military who lives in his father's basement and who supports supports a united Korea under a democratic system of government as well as letting the Bush tax cuts expire and who supports reform of the financial industry along with pay raises for teachers and who's one idea for raising money for the State of South Carolina seems to be mass producing dolls in his likeness wearing military garb and superhero clothing and selling them just doesn't seem to jibe with your political beliefs.
