For what its worth good or bad only time will tell.

Officials say tentative stimulus deal reached - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – Amid stunning new job losses and yet another bank failure, key senators and the White House reached tentative agreement Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's recovery plan. Two officials said the emerging agreement was for a bill with a $780 billion price tag, but there was no immediate confirmation.

The tentative agreement capped a tense day of back room negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, joined by White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.

Officials strongly suggested that Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's vote would be needed to assure passage. The Massachusetts Democrat, battling a brain tumor, has been in Florida in recent days and has not been in the Capitol since suffering a seizure on Inauguration Day more than two weeks ago. The senator's office did not comment.

Reid met privately in the Capitol with members of his rank-and-file to present the proposed deal.....continued

Although Patters had a CBS poll which showed 51% approval, the reliable Rassmussen had the lastest poll at 37% for passage of the bill (a few days ago). The Senate should be ashamed of themselves.

‘Stimulus': Your Money for Illegals, Welfare Recipients,
    Arts, and Sex

Just how outrageous is this shameful $819 billion stimulus?

For starters — and this will shock you — both the House and the Senate programs have a loophole that even gives illegal aliens cash payouts.

Here’s how The Associated Press explained it: “Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill, and one making its way through the Senate, would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number (TIN), to qualify for the tax credits.”

In case you didn’t know it, any illegal can get a TIN number from Social Security, no questions asked.

This means illegals who broke the law to get here will be eligible immediately for federal cash — up to $1,000!

It gets worse. Let me detail for you some facts from the “stimulus”:

More than $4 billion is earmarked for "neighborhood stabilization activities" — money that will go to groups like ACORN, which worked closely with the Obama campaign, the same group accused of massive voter fraud.
Almost half of the proposed spending will directly benefit the Service Employees International Union, federal, state, and municipal employee unions, or other Democratic-controlled unions, according to writer Ben Stein.
$600 million goes for news cars for top government bureaucrats.
Obama promised major infrastructure projects — yet only 5 percent of all the money goes for this.
$50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts.
$75 million to fund anti-smoking programs.
$650 million for the switch from analog television to digital.
$335 million to help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
$600 million for “climate change” research programs

Joe if you read its down to a mere 790 billion from 920 billion=130 Billion less so they must have taken some of those Pelosi projects out.

It's a spending bill, not a stimulus bill. It's a Liberal wet dream come true. Sigh. Well, we knew it was coming.

Actually you don't but if you're going to spend it should all be on stimulative projects and not on pet projects.

I dunno what the particulars are, so I'll wait till that's out to comment specifically. I will say though that this bill could very well pass, and the economy could rebound despite of that. This puts people like me in a ****ty position, since I'd like the economy to rebound, but don't think the bill, as it was being reported in the media, was worth passing.

****ty position is with respect to the fact that I don't want to see $1 trillion of spending added, but do want the economy to 180.

It's very possible that things will get better and people will credit the stimulus but the reality is some of the down cycles are going to turn around anyway with credit more affordable, the stock market priced for a near depression, etc. Of course we all hope things improve for the sake of ourselves and the country but I still don't support this particular bill.

Great move by the Dems. Perfect situation. WHEN the economy recovers, take the credit. If there is any prolonged recession, blame it on the Reps for not passing the entire "SPENDING" bill.

The Reps just got hosed. No, they hosed themselves.

CBO says it'll help short term :

"The agency projected the Senate bill would produce between 1.4 percent and 4.1 percent higher growth in 2009 than if there was no action. For 2010, the plan would boost growth by 1.2 percent to 3.6 percent."

    But not for long :

"CBO did project the bill would create jobs, though by 2011 the effects would be minuscule."

    Then, later, owwee :

"CBO estimates that by 2019 the Senate legislation would reduce GDP by 0.1 percent to 0.3 percent on net."

    Jeeziz, BF!
You're on a roll. There isn't much I can disagree with you lately...except, that I thought (wrongly) that Obama would be bringing at least some change. I'm such a sucka. :(

This is nothing new in Washington these days. Congress is being the usual dupes for the executive. There is NO change, and admitting mistakes while continuing to make them is just as dangerous as not admitting while continuing to make them.

The two scumbag hags from Maine voted for it (Snowe/Collins) those two bastards are "undercover democrats".

Those illegal aliens knew what they were doing when they snuck into this country.
The good thing about this is the Democrat Loons will have to live with it just like all of us Neo Cons.

WE HAVE A SOCIALIST DICTATOR LIVING IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND HE IS COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET SWINGING.

I am not sure as to how you got to the conclusion that "any illegal" could get a taxpayer identification number, because that is simply inaccurate:

    Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN)

    Pay attention to this part:

How Do I Get A TIN?

    SSN
You will need to complete Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card (PDF). You also must submit evidence of your identity, age, and U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status. For more information please see the Social Security web site.

Form SS-5 is also available by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting your local Social Security office. These services are free.

    EIN
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a federal tax identification number, and is used to identify a business entity. Refer to Employer ID Numbers for more information.

The following form is available only to employers located in Puerto Rico, Solicitud de Número de Identificación Patronal (EIN) SS-4PR (PDF).

    ITIN
An ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is a tax processing number only available for certain nonresident and resident aliens, their spouses, and dependents who cannot get a Social Security Number (SSN). It is a 9-digit number, beginning with the number "9", formatted like an SSN (NNN-NN-NNNN).

To obtain an ITIN, you must complete IRS Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (PDF) . The Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and true identity for each individual. You may either mail the documentation, along with the Form W-7, to the address shown in the Form W-7 Instructions, present it at IRS walk-in offices, or process your application through an Acceptance Agent authorized by the IRS. Form W-7(SP), Solicitud de Número de Identificación Personal del Contribuyente del Servicio de Impuestos Internos (PDF) is available for use by Spanish speakers.

Umm, of course. It's not a long haul bill, it's a patch to keep an historically bad economy from lurching into an historically long historically bad economy. How many times must we revisit the Hoover/Roosevelt lessons? It's called priming the pump and it's high school history. For people to pretend that it's anything other than what it is is foolhardy, disingenuous, and detracting from the discussion. Really. ANd do I need to point out that this is the Washington Times? Of course it can't present facts in context. Of course.

People, this is exactly what is making us stupid.

Has Obama ever mentioned that while this will help a little now it is a long term negative ? When he says that we may never recover if it doesn't pass, does he say that in 10 years it will be a net negative ? I don't think so. So much for transparency.
