Official Pats Prospects Workouts/Visits...

Status
Not open for further replies.
Not an individual work out but the Pats were on hand at UConn's pro day today to see Branch and OL Donald Thomas (presumably).

Some numbers are found here.

They've shown interest in other prospects that aren't listed because that interest doesn't fall under any of the categories.

For instance, they're reportedly among the teams inquiring about WR Adarius Bowman, but I don't know exactly what type of inquiry they've made.

Edit:

For the Mods, now that we're getting very close to April, would a thread like this (keeping track of prospect interest) be something we could move to the main board? It seems like it would get more views, and it also seems like a number of board members aren't among those frequenting this section. Also, can we make this a sticky?

Visiting hours
The Patriots are scheduled to host Southern California linebacker Keith Rivers for a predraft visit at Gillette Stadium early next month, according to Rivers's representatives. An outside linebacker in Southern Cal's 4-3 defense, the 6-foot-2-inch, 241-pound Rivers projects as an inside linebacker in the Patriots' 3-4 alignment.

Working it out
The Patriots continue to have coaches and scouts crisscross the country to attend Pro Days and meet and work out prospects. University of Buffalo center Jamey Richard is scheduled to be put through a private workout today by Patriots officials in Western New York.

Re: Update: Added a Private Workout for USC LB Keith Rivers.

For the record, I had already heard a rumor concerning this private workout, and almost brought it up yesterday to see if anyone had a linkable source.

Yeah Seb, same here. Also heard rumors about several prospects but unable to provide links. Harvey is one of the rumors, and is missing from the list. That's surprising considering we've shown interest in those ranked higher and lower than Harvey.

I've seen Harvey's workout rumored, but no credible source has confirmed this, and I wonder if people were just assuming BB must have worked out Harvey while he was in Florida? It would seem like a decent assumption, but BB's visited with Urban a number of times, and he wasn't always there to workout talent.

According to Vernon Gholston (interview), he's visiting the Patriots and 6 other teams in April, with New England first.

(Mike Reiss)
PALM BEACH, Fla., -- While coaches and personnel executives take a mini-break from draft preparations at the NFL's annual meeting, that hasn't stopped the draft from being a topic of discussion at The Breakers. Along those lines, the Patriots are scheduled to host Arkansas running back Darren McFadden on a pre-draft visit April 10-11 at Gillette Stadium.

(Jon Scott, Scout.com)
I heard back from Flowers' agent. Flowers is NOT going to visit the Patriots. What I did find out, is that they worked Flowers out privately after the pro day. It's a theme the Patriots have been pursuing with nearly every DB of interest.

(Jon Scott, Scout.com)
As reported in the Insider's Lounge (here), McKelvin is expected to workout for the Patriots this coming week. Scout.com's Ed Thompson confirmed the workout with McKelvin in a pre-draft interview Saturday.
"They're looking for a corner, and I feel I'm the number one corner in the draft, so I'm ready to go through anything for them," McKelvin told Thompson.

(Jon Scott, Scout.com)
McKelvin told Ed Thompson (Scout.com) yesterday that the Patriots are headed to Troy to personally work him out on Thursday. He also said that he will be flying up to New England after meeting with the Saints the 7-8th and the Ravens 13-14th with the Pats visit on the 15-16th

In an interview on SIRIUS NFL Radio Movin' the Chains, University of Eastern Michigan DL Jason D. Jones said he will meet with the New England Patriots.

Yes, he is interesting. From the Pats list of edge rushers, he's the only one with experience at DT. He's being projected as a power rusher.

Seen him listed in several top 100's, the highest being the #60 overall.

Combine: 6052 273 / 4.76 40

Here's a good article: Oh no, not another Jason Taylor comparison!

Lawrence Jackson update...

At his Pro Day (April 2), NFLDRAFTSCOUT.com reports:

Scouts from the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins put Jackson through linebacker drills, seeing him as a possible fit in their 3-4 scheme.

Seems like the Patriots are inspecting LB's a lot more this year. Hopefully that means they'll actually draft one, or two in the first three rounds.

An excellent point, and not a happy one, IMO. You have Moss, Welker, Jackson, Washington and Aiken all signed through at least '09, and Gaffney apparently eager to stay as long as they'll have him. IF they had any faith in Jackson to be a deep threat, they'd be in terrific shape. The heavy interest in WRs suggests that faith in Jackson isn't in big supply.

I get the impression that they've given up on Jackson as anything other than a KR/4th wideout. I don't have the same grim outlook that you have. There are several WR in this draft that would be a clear upgrade over Gaffney and having someone good opposite Moss makes him that much more effective. It is key to Welker's production out of the slot as well. We have multiple draft picks. We might as well use them to address our needs.

Well, Jackson hasn't done much yet (mostly due to injuries), and it would seem intelligent to have a backup plan. I still think he has plenty of potential, and I'm hoping he'll start cashing in on that potential this season, but we'll simply have to wait and see.

Gaffney's a possession receiver, with limited athletic ability. He's a decent target, and I like him on the team, but the Patriots could use a better starting option.

Kelley Washington hasn't done much as a receiver, and he could have found his calling on special teams.

Sam Aiken is a Special teams ace, with very little career offensive production.

I seemingly look at their WR situation a little differently than most, as I can see room for an additional WR, and I don't think some of the current players are guaranteed spots on the team.

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports the New England Patriots will host Eastern Michigan DL/LB Jason D. Jones April 13-14.

(Adam Shefter, NFL Network)
During this video segment, Shefter claims DRC visited NE, while Talib and Dorsey have visits scheduled.

Also, Capers went to Florida to meet with Jenkins & Williams, but I don't know if it was simply an interview, or more involved. So, I'm not listing that contact until I get further info, but it's still worth noting.

I believe that's 16 scheduled visits, with 15 of those players lining up on the defensive side of the ball. The limit is 30, so we'll likely hear about more scheduled visits over the next few weeks.

Bryan Smith getting look over by the pros

Smith, a two-time all-American defensive end who is expected to be a high round draft selection by the NFL, , has already been put through individual workouts by the New England Patriots and will be visited by personnel from the Detroit Lions later this week. The 2007 Southland Conference Player of the year has trips to both Pittsburgh and Tennessee coming up.
"He's already visited Detroit one time," said McNeese strength and conditioning coach Zeb Hawkins, "and they're coming this week to meet with him again."

At 6023 231, he's certainly a 'tweener'. Played DE in college, has no LB experience, and is now listed as an OLB/SS candidate.

Tremendous pass rusher on the small school level. Set school single game, single season and career records for quarterback sacks during his time at McNeese St. Had 7 sacks in '05, 13.5 in '06, and 10.5 this past season.

Voted Southland Conference Player of the Year in '07.

Smith possesses great burst off the snap and the straight-line speed to chase down ball carriers. He has intriguing change of direction and flashes explosiveness in his hands, prompting some to view him as a potential diamond in the rough.
