It's all about the here and now. You don't trade your best defensive player and pass rusher when Brady and Moss are in their prime. Let's sign a free agent cornerback who is past his prime, on the wrong side of thirty, and does not dress on game day. Let's sign a wide receiver closer to forty than thirty and is cut by midseason. Let's trade draft picks to the Oakland Raiders for a defensive end who can't even rush the quarterback. It's not about retooling at this point. It's about avoiding stupid moves like the Seymour trade going forward and making up for those mistakes which have already been made.
The Patriots could have retained Richard Seymour for this season, re-signed wide receiver Jabar Gaffney, and signed 3-4 outside linebacker Greg Ellis in free agency. The Patriots defense misses Richard Seymour more than the coaching staff will admit and I really wonder how many posters on this message board agree with that premise.
