Official Patrick Cobbs makes the team thread.....

Here are some counterpoints to MGT...

1. Dillon and Faulk aren't getting any younger.
2. Faulk is prone to fumbling, Cobbs has not shown that thus far.
3. Heath Evans is a power back but he is mediocre. Since when has BB valued size over ability? See the size of our wide receiving corps for reference.
4. Pass is on PUP and is also a mediocre RB/FB. How exactly does he block Cobbs?
5. Cobbs has more "upside" than any of the runningbacks you named not called Maroney.
6. If Dillon or Faulk gets hurt, Cobbs provides very valuable insurance that you won't be able to trade for during the season. Plus Cobbs has had the entire preseason and training camp to learn the offensive system.

Those are 6 bullets to counter your reasoning. Got a response?

I like Cobbs a lot but I gotta reject this reason. Cobbs fumbled last week against Arizona. Faulk has not fumbled once this preseason. I'm not saying Cobbs is a fumbler, just that we haven't seen enough of him to determine that.

First off, I agree that Cobbs will make the team.

Secondly, you asked how listing reasons of why there isn't a spot for him on the team has anything to do with whether or not he makes the team. Regardless of whether you agree with the given reasons, the idea is completely relevant to this thread and discussion.

with that logic one could say cobbs wont make the team because he parts his hair on the wrong side. you may not agree with the statement, but it is relevant to the thread because bb may not like his hair.

I agree with all those points save one. Cobbs AND Pass make this team (Pass PUPPED until week 6 when he returns and replaces Evans). Pass stays because of his O versatility and his stellar special teams play.

4 WR's, 4 RBs, 1 FB, 2 QBs, 4 TE's (Mills counting as a TE).

That's a ridiculous analogy. The reasons given are within the realm of possibility, while the example you gave is not. Use your common sense.

Cobbs had a fumble against Arizona on a running play, that is arguably a pretty high rate for the number of times he's touched the ball. I'm not holding it against him any more than I hold Faulks against him, but right now I project Cobbs as a third down specialist like Faulk.

Point 6 is a stretch until we see him work against some first team players, I think he will do well, but I'm projecting and need to see that. He's on my short list as a very hard cut to make, but lets not get too carried away in our enthusiasm before we see him taking Faulk's reps - and I know for a fact that Pass can do that.

Bedtime for Digger.

What I really like about this guy is his wreckless abandon for his own body. He will fling himself around to get a few extra yards or make a block.

And all the posters who point to Pass' ONE infamous play last year will continue to try to define his career by it.

Would that be the one where he just dropped the ball and grabbed his hamstring, causing an easy turnover?

Sorry- just messing with you, schmess.

I agree- Pass deserves a better fate than to be remembered just for that. He's done some good things for some of our championship squads.

You know and I know that Evans is very likely to make the 53. Pass may or may not replace him after week 8. I've always liked Pass, but you never know how a player's body will react to an injury. And of course, a healthy Pass would easily make this roster.

With regard to Cobbs, we can certainly keep a couple of develpmental players that won't make it to the Practice Squad. Cobbs won't. This would likely mean cutting a STer or a linebacker.

From what I read, Pass' situation isn't actually a recent injury. If I recall, he had a corrective procedure done on his foot that stemmed from a College injury. This condition has hampered him throughout his pro career and, this offseason, doctors convinced him that they could actually improve the situation via corrective surgery.

I think it will be very tough for Cobbs to survive the 53. He may well be one of the best 53 players on the team, but if he will never see the field, we don't have the best chance to win with him on the roster. Dillon, Maroney, Faulk simply make him expendable, but moreso, almost eliminates any chance he can contribute.
Do you keep the 5th corner, who plays in the game if ONE player is out injured, or the 4th RB who wouldn't be active until at 2 RBs are injured, and then still may not get on the field.
If we are talking about whether he played well enough to earn a roster spot, that is an entirely different conversation than whether he will.

By the way, claiming that who the other players are at his position is irrelevant to him making the team is about the whackiest comment Ive seen here in months.

Ah, but I don't know Evans will make the squad. I do like him as a power runner, which given BB's desire to punish opposing defenses makes him attractive. He's also a good receiver and decent on Special Teams. That said, he isn't good on blitz pick-up or blocking of any sort. If it comes down to keeping a Woods or Britt on the squad, and relying on Maroney to do some power running if Dillon gets hurt, Evans gets cut. Ideally, Cobbs is sent to the Practice Squad so he can be developed further, and it may be that AJ's fifth CB gets a higher priority (I expect 6 myself). As I noted, he's on my very hard to cut list, we'll see if he's on BB's.

Who cares? The guy is a preseason hero. If you lined up Cobbs against the Dolphins, he wouldn't get 30 yards. Nice story but as usual, the New England fan base has to blow it out of proportion like he's the second coming.

And we know this because....? Evans is, at best, a JAG+. Why is he so safe?
