Chad Ochocinco - WR - Patriots

Updating a previous item, the Patriots did not work out a new contract with Chad Ochincoco after acquiring him on July 28.
A faulty report claimed Ocho signed a new three-year deal, but he's still working on his Bengals contract. He is due $6 million this season, and is scheduled for unrestricted free agency in 2012. The Pats will likely wait to see his production level before addressing the 33-year-old's deal, if they do at all.

This has cap repercussions no doubt. I was wondering why we didn't have a few extra million

    thoughts?

I like the move I like Ocho very much and basically he has to prove himself here before a 2 yr extension.

edit- Ocho is the kind of guy that if he is happy here he will surely stay:)

6 million is an awful lot, I just hope he does well and we do extend him

I'm sure a deal is ready if we need the cap space cleared.

Why make the assumption that the patriots have made more than a 1 year commitment to either Ocho or Haynsworth?

It would be odd to see Chad making $6M when Branch and Welker are making a lot less. I think Bedard is just going by what the NFLPA site has up for salaries for players now that it is back in business. No reason to think they will not restructure. Thing is until they do they are not on the hook for dead cap. So maybe his restructure gets filed when they are sure he is healthy and starting in week 1... His restructure would likely involve $5M of his $6M becoming a signing bonus payable immediately and the addition of one or two years at $2-3M with some incentives or escalators.

As for Haynesworth, no need to restructure him. His numbers are fine for the next two years. He is due another option bonus in 2013 (according to rotoworld) so if he makes it here he could be extended some time in 2012. Otherwise, again, no dead cap on these deals which essentially makes them prove it deals.

I think that they are staying with the one year deal for now so that Ocho Cinco doesn't miss any practices. If they redid his contract, he would not have started practicing until yesterday.

What with acquiring a new system and working with a new QB, Ocho Cinco needs every single practice he can get in. He is still far behind the curve.

MG - There is no assumption regarding Chad. It was reported that the Pats and he had reached an agreement on a contract extension and that is what facilitated the trade. It was also stated that the new contract wouldn't be signed until after the CBA was signed because it would have meant that Chad would have had to wait to start practicing.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for the Pats to have an agreement with Chad to submit the contract at a later date if it was needed to provide the Pats with Cap relief.

Technically Albert is under our control until 2015. Albert had his contract front loaded and he is affordable in the present terms of his deal. If AL is a good citizen here he will be around for quite some time. Ocho is same situation, but as Bruinz stated he probably already has a deal ready to be signed and we r keeping his original to avoid the no practice situation. I am sure Ocho will perform here w/ a REAL QB and a coach he respects as a mentor and friend:rocker:

Albert can be let go at any time if he misbehaves. I do not see this happening, however. He is on a WINNER for a team and a great situation to be apart of and flourish in

so thats around 12 million this year on Ocho, Branch and Welker thats not on the books for 2012.

Too early to make predictions about who stays or goes. Or is it?

My point is that we have commitment to Haynsworth beyond this year. While $6.7M is "affordable" for 2012, the patriots have no money committed. What we have is a zero cost option.

    $11M (plus 2 future 5th-rounders & a 6th) for Ochostinko & Fat Albert
= a huge waste of precious, valuable cap recources that could've been used elsewhere
to find players who not only could play positions of actual need (deep-threat WR & Pass-Rusher)
but who also put their team ahead of themselves.

That's funny. Because Haynesworth just improved the pass rush a lot, and Ochocinco is the intermediate threat that the team really needed, rather than a deep threat.

Haynesworth is going to be great this year and ochoconco is going to have another great year. Love where this team is at right now.

Our offense has so many playmakers, no other team in the AFC can really match up. Brady, Ochocinco, Welker, Branch, Gronk, Hernandez, Law firm, woodhead ect ect ect...wow

    I disagree.
Branch is not in Chad's league. Branch willingly took a paycut to come here, so I don't think he cares too much anymore if he's underpaid (which I dont think he necessarily is).

Welker might feel slighted. If Welker were to feel slighted, he'd feel so with our without Chad on this team. He misjudged his own value/potential when he signed the long contract with the Patriots; and if he doesn't like it, he's free to take action (sit out, demand trade, etc).

I dont think Bill cares, nor should he care, about other player's feelings when he signs another player.

At 37 NO WR is going to be something to fear, even Jerry Rice. However that being said, I think Mason is a much better pick up than Burress was, and I bet he's that much more effective.for them in the end

That being said their 3 top receivers are Holmes, who is a quality receiver but was such a bad guy that the Steelers let him go for a jockstrap and 3 cases of Gaterade. I will be interested to see how he plays now that he has gotten the big contract. Burress, who was slow when he came into the league, but a good red zone threat, is 34 and hasn't played the game in 2 years. Plus Mason, who is a great receiver, but STILL at 37, how reliable will he be. The bottom line here is, no matter how Jet fans want to play it, their WR corp is a lot less dangerous than it was last season
