Obama?s National Service Plan= SLAVERY? Oh really? - Jack & Jill Politics

There’s a weird irony at work when Sen. Barack Obama, the black presidential candidate who will allegedly scrub the stain of racism from the nation, vows to run afoul of the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery.

For those who don’t remember, the 13th Amendment says: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime … shall exist within the United States.”

In his speech on national service Wednesday at the University of Colorado, Obama promised that as president he would “set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year.”

He would see that these goals are met by, among other things, attaching strings to federal education dollars. If you don’t make the kids report for duty, he’s essentially telling schools and college kids, you’ll lose money you can’t afford to lose. In short, he’ll make service compulsory by merely compelling schools to make it compulsory

If you are going to give college students a break in tuition, I don't have
a problem with optional service for college students.

Making middle school students preform 50 hours of service is ridiculous.

Just like switzerland where you must serve in the military or back during military times where you were obligated to be part of the militia for your very survival.

this ranks up there as one of the most idiotic posts of all time.

    giving back equals slavery?

people should give back instead of consuming all the time.

Do us all a favour and go read a history book with a focus on slavery.

It's amazing how rightwingers are too dumb to keep their ignorance hidden.

I read this byline this morning and thought whoever wrote this stuff is so out of touch with the reality of day to day american life, they have got to be from another planet. I work in an organization with a lot of people doing community service.. 50 hours is not a lot in 3 years, it comes out to be about 16 a year.. not too much to ask a 6th, 7th or 8th grader.. community service has become a way of life already.. consider the following:

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are required to do community service...
National Honor Society members are required to do community service..
Many college and high school courses require community service..
Armed forces personnel are expected to do community service, as a prerequisite for rank advancement..
    Churches require community service..
Organizations often require comm service if people want to advance..
Sometimes I have parents who accompany their child on a comm serv project, because they want to be involved and are not familiar with the concept..

It goes on and on, and from someone who has witnessed it from a couple of different levels it is expected and accepted by many people right now...

I think it is a lot disengenuous to bring in the slavery analogy.. it is not big deal in most of the world right now. Giving back is a good thing, but it will be spun wrong.. from the eyes of the right.

It's no different than making them go to public school. It's educational. If kids spend 50 hours doing public service helping out in church, hospitals, schools, or other programs, they will learn something.

    This is not switzerland !

When my kids are in middle school, I want they doing homework, attending
after school programs and doing whatever they want to do.

This is the land of the free .... not the land of the fee

If the military conscription is not slavery, I don't know how anyone could conceive this is.

And some public schools already have this requirement. It is even more prevalent in private schools.

I've heard almost every candidate running for president say something of this nature. No one has ever done anything as a follow-up. That would be awesome if Obama followed thru.
If you would like to read a book on slavery, there is a highly recommended one concerning Jefferson and his mistress slave Sally.

I heard about this program on the radio yesterday.
When I did a google search today to get additional information, I found
the article what compared it to slavery.

I decided to stir the pot.

I received the response from the left I expected.

Now my next question to the left.

Why do you support national service for middle school children and oppose
    workfare for welfare recipients?

What about the national service program for welfare recipients?
Why not also include people who frequent unemployment?

Don't you agree that people on welfare and people who frequent unemployment, should
give back in some type of national service plan? Maybe they will learn something.

I think people on welfare should be looking for jobs and if they're off doing community service it limits opportunities to look for jobs.

Youth should be taught civic pride. If we had more involvement on Earth Day cleanup, taking care of our parks, taking care of our cemeteries many parts of our towns and cities would not look like dumps.

If they were taught an early age that they shouldn't litter because they'll be the ones cleaning it up then we'd have a better society.

It's not unlike the school where I work. the students at lunch don't pick up after themselves because they know the custodians will.

Back two centuries ago we didn't have all these municipal departments. people chipped in.

Suprise.... Suprise.... Suprise..... Mrs Buttersworth does not believe
welfare recipients should be included in the national service plan.

They should be out looking for jobs.:rofl::rofl:

You cannot look for a job and take part in the national service plan?

you can... but then you'll start hearing "I couldn't goo out looking for a job because I was in the national service plan"

I think you need to find another way to make welfare less attractive.
