Charges Against 'New Black Panthers' Dropped by Obama Justice Dept. - Political News - FOXNews.com

Charges Against 'New Black Panthers' Dropped by Obama Justice Dept.
Three men were accused of trying to threaten voters and block poll and campaign workers by the threat of force -- one even brandishing what prosecutors call a deadly weapon.

Charges brought against three members of the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense under the Bush administration have been dropped by the Obama Justice Department, FOX News has learned.

The charges stemmed from an incident at a Philadelphia polling place on Election Day 2008 when three members of the party were accused of trying to threaten voters and block poll and campaign workers by the threat of force -- one even brandishing what prosecutors call a deadly weapon.

The three black panthers, Minister King Samir Shabazz, Malik Zulu Shabazz and Jerry Jackson were charged in a civil complaint in the final days of the Bush administration with violating the voter rights act by using coercion, threats and intimidation. Shabazz allegedly held a nightstick or baton that prosecutors said he pointed at people and menacingly tapped it. Prosecutors also say he "supports racially motivated violence against non-blacks and Jews."

The Obama administration won the case last month, but moved to dismiss the charges on May 15.

The complaint says the men hurled racial slurs at both blacks and whites.

A poll watcher who provided an affidavit to prosecutors in the case noted that Bartle Bull, who worked as a civil rights lawyer in the south in the 1960's and is a former campaign manager for Robert Kennedy, said it was the most blatant form of voter intimidation he had ever seen.

In his affidavit, obtained by FOX News, Bull wrote "I watched the two uniformed men confront voters and attempt to intimidate voters. They were positioned in a location that forced every voter to pass in close proximity to them. The weapon was openly displayed and brandished in plain sight of voters."

He also said they tried to "interfere with the work of other poll observers ... whom the uniformed men apparently believed did not share their preferences politically," noting that one of the panthers turned toward the white poll observers and said "you are about to be ruled by the black man, cracker."

A spokesman for the Department of Justice told FOX News, "The Justice Department was successful in obtaining an injunction that prohibits the defendant who brandished a weapon outside a Philadelphia polling place from doing so again. Claims were dismissed against the other defendants based on a careful assessment of the facts and the law. The department is committed to the vigorous prosecution of those who intimidate, threaten or coerce anyone exercising his or her sacred right to vote."

I mentioned this Acorn thing a couple of weeks ago and nobody said a word, and how one could miss the Panther connection is beyond me. Not really though; everyone's so wrapped up in everything else that's going on that we're missing the true crux of who's In Charge. People don't just lose their old connections, especially when the old connections have always been so profitable.

If something's been going on for years why would anyone think it's suddenly stopped?

Liberal, Republican, call it whatever you want, but if you can't see corruption then there's nothing else to be said, jmho tho. I'm probably one of if not the most non-partisan person on this board btw.

    It was all about this:

"People don't just lose their old connections, especially when the old connections have always been so profitable."

Stevens and the NH Republicans had no connection to Obama whatsoever.

But Obama has connections to ACORN and to the Weathermen. Among others. Things keep resurfacing that lean towards "People don't lose their old connections, etc".

What is interesting about this case is finding reliable information as to why this was done.. the best I can come up with is from a blog.. but still explains little about the decision.

    Black Panthers = KKK

Imagine members of the KKK standing in front of a polling place with "nightsticks"

Of course the right is up in arms about this, just as the left was up in arms when the government refused to adequately investigate and prosecute Republican operatives who were distributing flyers in Democratic districts with false info about polling place, who were making robocalls giving people false info, and who used intimidation in Florida as part of their strategy to steal the election in 2001. Republicans are learning the hard way what goes around comes around.

Honest question for all liberals and Obama supporters. If person A takes a gun and kills an innocent person, is it a good defense to make in court that other people have done the same thing? Does it make what person A did any less wrong?

My point is, why is it that every time something comes up that casts a shodow on Obama your defense is to tell us what the Bush administration did wrong and how it is worse then what Obama did? Do you realize that you are not absolving or defending Obama? All you are trying to accomplish is to deflect the wrong doings of Obama and his administration. If you really want to compare him to the mistakes of other administrations, please go ahead. All you are doing is helping prove that Obama is nothing special. He doesnt bring "change" and he is in fact like every other politician to come through Washington.

Lets put it simply, to help you understand.. why did they do it?? There has been some info referring to some type of techicality, what is it and why is there no reliable information on it?? Reliance of Washington Times articles or right wing blogs in the past has often proven to be foolhardy..

If you want to hijack your own thread so be it, but try to stick to the topic you started.

I did not hijack anything. I was simply replying to the post made by the person trying to defend Obamas actions by using the actions of the prior administration.

    That's destructive, Patters.

"What goes around comes around" only prolongs the cycle of history. Time to break out of that mentality and foster a "Do the right thing" leadership. Anyone who truly cares about human progress and the longterm welfare of our society rejects that. That is exactly the same kind of thinking that brought our country down to the level of the savages/terrorists at Guantanamo. The terrorists won, not militarily (that was not their goal), but they turned us into something different and we abandoned our principles - -THAT was their goal.
