I don't think the Bush administration did enough in relations with the Muslim world. I think Obama will be like the Pope ... reach out to everybody and seek common ground.

No, you are the dishonest one by implying with your thread title that Obama is somehow "returning to Muslim beliefs" because he plans to address them.

    You are amazing.

Rick Warren, who I usually have very little use for, just did a fairly interesting clip on CNN, where he starts out saying "I. Love. Muslims. I also love Jews and Hindus and Buddhists..." etc. etc. etc. He goes on to say he also loves gays and straights.

I don't like some of his politics (i.e., how he "shows" that he loves gays and straights...) but it's nice to see.

I don't understand the hate and xenophobia. I do know you can get a diplomatic picture skewering any leader making nice with any other leader. Big deal. They always do this stuff, and Saudi is, after all, not just an ally of the U.S., but a huge trading partner.

If you want to change that, change that, but don't get your panties in a wad that leaders and leaders-elect are the "wrong" religion, or know people from the "wrong" religion, or whatever your paranoid little problem is.

Obama's not a Muslim... but as Colin Powell says, "So what if he is?"

Part of me wants to start spending Sunday mornings going to churches and friday nights and saturday mornings checking our mosques and synagogs, to see what people are teaching these days... but I am too lazy these days. I do know the great majority do not show their faith to the almighty solely through this purile tribalism.

What is it, 3 or 4 days until the Christian world proclaims "peace on Earth, goodwill to men..." yadda yadda yadda? Believe me Jews and Muslims have plenty of opportunities to also mouth very noble sentiments.

And then a handful of hypocrites marches us all into combat with and hatred of each other, every damn time.

The holy warriors are nothing without their enablers. I choose not to be one. Where political bodies face off against each other sure, we have to decide where we stand, since we are part of these political bodies. But I refuse to curse, or deride, or praise one religion or another, based on the behavior of a few adherents... and I hope it's a good thing, that I don't give a damn which unproveable propositions are foremost in your spiritual life. I don't care if you're an atheist or an animist -- if you act right, that's good. I don't care if you're a Christian, Jew, or Muslim, if you act wrong, that's bad.

Part of God, if you believe in God, is he's supposed to be all knowing (which we are not.) It is therefore possible there is something more evolved than this viewpoint that good people are good and bad people are bad... or even it's bad if people do bad acts, and good if they do good acts... but I doubt very seriously that this "more evolved" viewpoint consists and hating others for holding their own religious views.

Your a decent man PFnV, it's to bad we all don't share the same view towards Christians, Jews, Mormons & Moonies that the American Left Wing Liberals show toward the Muslim.

Colin Powel said, "so what if he's a Muslim" how many Liberal Democrats said "so what if he's a Mormon" when speaking of Mitt Romney and look at the sh!t Huckabee took over his God, Mitt Romney was crucified be cause of his religion and not one voice was heard from the liberal left but mention a Muslim and you risk being banned from humanity.

Why do most Do-Gooders and most Liberals seem to always support America's Enemy-------------

First of all, Huckabee is a Christian, Like Obama and Biden. What Huckster took heat for was his rejection of evolution and other retarded associated beliefs like a 7-day Creation and humans hunting dinosaurs. Other than that, I liked the guy a lot. Just cuz you're stupid, doesn't mean you're not a great guy...just means you can't be president (I know, Bush was elected twice...I know....).

And "most liberals"do not support America's enemies. No more than so-called "conservatives" do. I'm sure you know plenty of liberals who are good Americans and great people.

Liberals that are great people, I have them in my family (I love the arguments I'm always right)

Huckster takes heat for his rejection of evolution, if a Muslim does run for president I believe he should also take heat for his beliefs, and people should be able to "give him heat" without being called "a racist"
It's the old Politically Correct Double Standard again.

Muslims were behind 9/11 but we aren't supposed to say it, if Mormons, Moonies or a group of Baptists attacked America and the Moonies, Mormans and Baptists danced in the street would we have allowed to "mention it"?

You know me, Harry. I think all religions are kooky. None are more kooky than the Judeo / Muslim / Christian model baseed on the Old Testament. Now, there's some crazy sh!t.

I'm sick of politicians who wear their religion on their sleeve as if it should matter to anyone else. I don't care what anyone's beliefs are - just don't bring it onto the jobsite - keep it in the church and home. They can teach their kids to believe in space aliens for all I care. That's their problem.

BINGO. And if Tom Cruise ever runs, we will have a president who believes in buckets and buckets of space aliens. And more importantly, WHO CARES????

We're not electing a High Priest. We're electing a president.

In answer to one of the earlier comments here: Yep, Rick Warren did say he loves Gays and Straights. In a Baptist Church, no less.

I don't like the inroads of "faith" into the secular sphere, and I believe Warren is a BIG fan of that. But you have to give him credit for his viewpoint, shared (I believe) by a lot of people who I want OUT of politics... that is, they are against the "sin" not the "sinner."

The trouble is not everybody shares their definition of "sin," and still others believe that "sin" has no place in our national secular debate. After all, America was founded on pagan-originated Common Law, deist/secularist enlightenment thought, and a hodgepodge of religious beliefs. This is a source of diversity and strength for this nation. Just as one cannot say our economy will be "strongest" through one singular industry, one cannot say our society will be "strongest" through one singular mythos. That is a big part of the American experiment.

Just me on my soapbox again. Harry, your idea of what "most liberals" are like is never at all in step with real people I know. It seems likely to me that you react to televised liberals, confined as they are to their sound-bites, and regurgitated through right-wing radio stations and blogs. It's no wonder something gets lost.

What you have to realize is that what you write here is being read by real live breathing liberals, not straw men you invented. You'll end up talking to pretty decent guys all the way down, and frankly, I talk to quite a few decent people who are on the other side of things all the time. It's okay that their views are wrong... if they've at least thought them through.

Religion matters when electing the leader of a free country we do not want a leader who lets his loyalty to his God interfere with the decisions he has to make to lead his country, I personally would not want a Muslim President for the USA, we have all seen the "LOYAL WORSHIP" they show for their God, great multitudes of them are willing to Kill over a simple CARTOON.

ok, fair enough. Do you also believe it is wrong for it to be taught in elementary schools that having 2 mommys or 2 Daddys is just normal and if you dont think so you are a bigoted homophobe?
Im on record as saying many times i dont scapegoat, homosexuality is no more a sin that any other sin. But the other sins arent taught as aggressively to young people as being NOT sinful. And thats forcing an idea on people who disagree.
    Is that different?

My belief is that public school should be for reading, writing, and addn'

I dont think they should become Bible studies, and I dont think they should be a place to advance Gay Rights or Free Love either.

agreed. Rick Warren does a lot of scapegoating of Homosexuals and worked to get Prop 8 passed. He brings a whole lot of attention to himself, claims that he is "Americas Pastor" and is basically viewed as one those "False Prophets" talked about in the Bible by most Bible believing Christians. Sadly, many Christians are duped by him, and they follow every word he says as if hes God or something. Hes not the only one, they do it to the obnoxious James Dobson to.
Im not a fan of Rock Star Pastors. Christians should be reading the Bible and following the Lord, not praying on a "Purpose Driven Life" and following everything uttered by Rick Warren.

Welp, not being a Christian I don't have to worry about which cult of personality the flock is flocking to...

Lifer, I think I just saw you express a similar opinion regarding gay rights to Warren's, regarding teaching tolerance in school. I don't think either of you are right, but it's better to say "love the sinner hate the sin" than "hate the sinner," and there's plenty of that around too. (my apologies if I got the poster wrong though. I'm posting in haste, repenting at leisure today.)

After the whole Saddleback fiasco, I had a pretty good idea that Warren is a smiling face for kinder, genter fundamentalism, no problem there. But were those who are frothing about Obama being a Muslim even so tolerant as a Rick Warren, this thread would not be here... CERTAINLY, were we as tolerant as Colin Powell, we wouldn't be wasting our time on this nonsense.

It's a funny one too. The play went like this:

Step 1: Say he's a Muslim, since he's not one.

Step 2: His supporters say "no he's not."

Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until it's established in a fairly large number of minds that being a Muslim disqualifies you from running for president.

By the time this idiotic thread gets posted, we "accuse" a man of being a Muslim, as if it's empirically any worse than being some other religion.

    It's just dumb.

Kind of like the classic John McCain moment that the media completely missed in its focusing on the Crazy lady.

Crazy Lady : "Hes an Arab!"

John McCain : "No. No, ma'am. Hes a decent, family man"

Im still amazed by McCains, and by its non-reaction, America's 2 plus 2 that to be an Arab means you are not decent.

To be a Muslim in and of itself is ok in America. It really is, people.

But Barack Obama is not a Muslim, he is a Christian, so it is irrelevant when discussing Barack Obama. And he has a birth certificate. And he is going to be the 44th President of the United States.
And he won by a sizable margin and has a mandate.
