WASHINGTON – US President Barack Obama this week signed the 2010 foreign aid budget law which includes $2.775 billion in security aid to Israel. Your figures are comparing a foreign aid package over a 10 year period to a one-time disaster relief payment with likely more on the way (and not including the other types of aid we already are sending to Haiti).

And we should take you seriously because......?

Didn't Obama also say that the $100 million was only the start?

Foreign aid is a good investment. Relative to what we spend on war, it's a pittance. Nations like Haiti and Israel are more than likely to remain solid allies for years to come thanks to our support. The Israeli situation is more complicated, but I don't think the amount of money spent is the issue.

Because I'm disturbed by this, you seem to be johnny super cool about forking 30 Billion over for "aid"....

what exactly will Israel be doing with the 30 Billion? What aid will they be needing? Certainly not 1/1000th of the aid that Haiti and its 150,000 DEAD people and massivly destroyed infrastructure needs...

    Oh wait......let me guess....

They will be buying more WEAPONS from us!!!!!

    Oh great!

meanwhile.....Johnny and Jane America just lost thier home, and neither has a job....30 Billion could do a lot for our nation....

lets keep manufacturiung and funding our Military Industrial complex....

and we should take YOU seriously....

Foreign aid is tantamount to extortion.

    well...its tricky P...

What exactly do we get for 30 Billion dollars? NOBODY likes the Israelis in that region, they are surrounded by enemies. They should be paying US!

Can't wait for those Hatian soldiers to finally hit the ground in Afghanistan so we can win this war on Terror....

as I stated, this is a front to invest in our Military Industrial Complex....We are not buying any allies here....

You think we give money to countries because we love them?

So Bush loved all the countries he gave aid to?

Seriously ... less foreign aid = a more balanced budget.

As far as Israel and Haiti goes, we're doing nothing different for them than we did for Europe at the end of WWII. We tend to help countries where people from here have a lot of connection. True, the Israelis aren't Christian and the Haitians aren't white, but for many people in this country there's a powerful and influential sense of connection. I'm not sure how legitimate the case is for providing so much support to Israel, but I do think it's plausible that without a strong Israel our situation would be worse. That said, I absolutely agree with your point about the military industrial complex, which at the very least is a cynical partner in all of this.

Somewhere the heart must play a role. Do you politics not come from feelings? From the desire to make the world a happier, safer, healthier place?
