How about we give nothing to other countries but set up a charity bucket that people can give money to that is sent overseas. That way it's voluntary and not forced. There is nothing anyway in the Constitution or other such documents that allows for this.

Amen, brother. This thread is not meant to be negative on BO, if McCain proposed the same, I would post the same.

Enough for poverty overseas. How about the good ole USA? Our economy is in shamples, taped together with band-aides.

Yet you're completely OK with the billions wasted each month upholding a police action or two abroad...

When you get serious about putting the USA first, get back to us....

If he wants to give a little more of my money for poverty in THIS COUNTRY then fine ... this is in direct contrast to reducing foreign aid that he promised ... that's it ... I've had it now.

You had it about 8 months ago.. come on now.

An anecdotal comment, but was talking to a guy who does emergency worldwide relief as a profession, just got back from Thailand and going to Nepal in November.. he was saying the hardest part of his job is being an American, as at one time he was viewed as a person who represented a much different nation than he does now. His job had gotten much more difficult in the past 10 years...

Now that taxpayers are prepared to shell out up to $1 trillion in the latest Socialist approach to the markets, $50 billion to help the hungry and build relations seems like a relatively small amount. I wonder if we offered Saddam $50 billion for his own personal use, if we could have saved 4000 American lives and $400 billion. Investing $50 billion buys us an awful lot of goodwill and may in fact someday prevent a country from turning against us and forcing us to put more American soldiers in harms way.

the problem I have with foreign aid for poverty is that the governments of these people usually then proceed to furthur rape them of everything they have. We make it easier for them to make money off of our kindness. I am not sure what the solution is or even if there is a solution ... but giving money away is not the answer.

So you advocate extortion? We should pay off everyone that hates us?
What kind of logic is that?

Please, feel free to digress and hijack the thread.

Sure let militant Islam do what they wish and bribe other countries for their "goodwill". Yea, great idea, Einstein.

Obama wants to double foreign aid from 25 to 50 billion by 2012.

On top of that he wants to pass the Global Poverty act which would pledge us to give 0.7 percent of our GDP (65 Billion) per year for the next 13
years to the UN. The UN would distribute the money to third world dictators
so that they would like us better.

I like the pass the hat idea.

    Why make charity manditory?

There are plenty of rich liberals.... Let George Soros & the rest of the looney
    left give away their money.

No, we should give aid to countries before they start hating us, but if the choice is between killing tens of thousands of foreigners, losing thousands of American troops, and spending $400 billion on war or bribing some evil leader to step down, which would you choose? We've certainly been bribing leaders for many years. Ever heard of Musharraf?

Well, we are already giving lots of aid to some African countries through the UN and other relief organizations ... the people seem to love us and their governments are still brutal dictators who will never like anyone except themselves.

What do you think of the $1 trillion Socialist-style government bailout? Why would a measly $50 billion upset you? Because it's helping the hungry? Maybe if we help the hungry now, they will be our friends later on? Think of it as an investment, at least as good an investment as the $1 trillion one the government is probably going to make.

If you hate me because I'm wealthy and your child becomes sick and you can't afford proper treatment, would you consider me an extortionist for offering to help your child?

How is it hijacking to say that the $50 billion would be a good idea. That is a direct comment on the thread topic. We're not supposed to all agree in these threads juneau.

Goodwill is the American way. And goodwill in spite of terrorism would help us even more as good people of foreign nations would say "Wow, even though terrorists attack them, they still want to help other nations"

Never mind, you're right, that would be a horrible thing to do!
