Am I reading the story incorrectly, or is the headline completely misleading?

From my quick read, the US didn't opine on his release in Libya. Their preference, in order, was (i) for him to remain imprisoned in Scotland, (ii) fir him to be released but forced to remain in Scotland and (iii) for him to be transferred to a Libyan prison.

Nothing in the article says the US supported the transfer to Libya.

    No, you're reading it correctly.

It's the way it's been offered that's incorrect.

But that's not surprising - seeing as how The Australian is owned by Rupert Murdoch.

It's a little misleading, not completely misleading. If Scotland insisted on releasing him from prison by allowing him to remain as free as as a bird and that was "far preferable" to Libyan prison for the US, then I can see how someone could call that support for the move. It does seem to be a half hearted attempt to protest his release.

How long before this is being flogged on Fox News by Our Lady of Perpetual Outrage, Megyn Kelly?

I assume there are reasons the US government does not want him in Libya, either in prison or as a free man.

But the bottom line is that their opposition to the release was categorical. In the case Scotland decided to release him, they'd prefer him to remain in Scotland than in Libya. I assume it would be easier for US intelligence to surveil him in Great Britain than it would be elsewhere.

Excepth that "his release" as it occurred is exactly what the US most opposed. The release that the US considered preferable was for him to remisn in Scotland.

The implication is that the LAST thing the US wanted was his return to Libya --the opposite of what the headline implies.

I don't know how the US opposition can be seen as halfhearted when even this story acknowledges that the US wanted him to remain imprisoned in Scotland.

Well as long as this has been hijacked then I'll sayKelly is no worse a partisan than Rachel Madow is for example, and based on the completely dishonest show Madow just did on the Sherrod/Fox story then she's a lot more honest. I have more respect right now for Kelly than I do for Madow.

What the he11 is going on here lately? Can nothing be discussed anymore without Fox being the instant "closing argument" for the left? Cripes, Howard Dean went on a tirade this morning blaming Fox for Sherrod's firing until he was embarrassed with the fact that the decision for her firing was made before he name had even ever been mentioned on Fox. Fox is way biased left and is well deserving of much criticism but dropping their name does not automatically win you an argument.

    From the article:

"Scottish ministers viewed the level of US resistance to compassionate release as "half-hearted" and a sign it would be accepted."

"Correspondence obtained by The Sunday Times reveals the Obama administration considered compassionate release more palatable than locking up Abdel Baset al-Megrahi in a Libyan prison."

Backing his release may have been a 2nd or 3rd option for the oBama administrion, however, it never should have been even a consideration.

Well Kelly does report news but also has opinion segments that are clearly advertised as such. Madow completely fabricated the Sherrod/Fox piece and presented as factual news. It was a complete lie.

No discussion about how Obama blatently lied to the public that he had no role in this whatsoever?

release in Scotland -- not to Libya

I agree with you about his release at all -- but what the headline implies is contrary to the content of the letter as reported in the article.

btw, bringing the talk of fox back to the thread, I can't link it easily from my phone, but even fox has an accurate headline on their story about this
