Administration open to taxing health benefits

Proposal problematic for Obama as he denounced similar one in campaign

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration is signaling to Congress that the president could support taxing some employee health benefits, as several influential lawmakers and many economists favor, to help pay for overhauling the health care system.

The proposal is politically problematic for President Obama, however, since it is similar to one he denounced in the presidential campaign as ‚Äúthe largest middle-class tax increase in history.‚ÄĚ Most Americans with insurance get it from their employers, and taxing workers for the benefit is opposed by union leaders and some businesses.

In television advertisements last fall, Mr. Obama criticized his Republican rival for the presidency, Senator John McCain of Arizona, for proposing to tax all employer-provided health benefits. The benefits have long been tax-free, regardless of how generous they are or how much an employee earns. The advertisements did not point out that Mr. McCain, in exchange, wanted to give all families a tax credit to subsidize the purchase of coverage.

But they won't have raised the Income Tax on the bottom 95% so it's OK

I saw an Obamaman on Fox News Sunday and Chris Wallace tried to get him to say they aren't going to do this but he wouldn't. It came across loud and clear to this viewer that the Obamans plan to tax health benefits to pay for health care for those who can't pay for it.

I think it would border upon treasonous if he tries to get this passed. I imagine he'll want to levy this tax on single people earning more than $75K and couples earning more than $150K.

From what I read, there was no mention it was limited to income over a certain amount.

Cool! More of that great change we can believe in!

At least McCain's plan had a tax credit of $2500 to compensate for this.

I thought McLame's plan was dumb, which means Obama's idea is borderline retahdid. This means that wages will have to go up, and if companies have to pay higher wages, then you can guarantee that they'll have to charge more for their products. Either that or people will have to live with less. I didn't like McLame's plan for this very reason. Cuz giving a credit of $5, when benefits cost $10, still means paying more taxes than you were before.

They're not concerned because their boy is doing it, if it were Bush they would all be running to their shrinks again.

I was just watching MSNBC, that Andrea Mitchell women was still gushing and slobbering about what Beautiful Arms Princes Michelle has, while the country falls apart and goes bankrupt the Obama Media (cbs, nbc pbs jon stewart) will all still be crowing about "The Great Speeches"

    Disgusting Sh!t.

The man you voted for said no tax increases on those making under $250K.

Where are you getting these numbers from - why it's the slippery slope of the Obamamen lying.

This is a quote from what I saw :

"The president has laid out a series of clear principles on the health plan that we will do whatever it takes to get affordable quality coverage to all Americans," he added. "And he's outlined a more than $600 billion cost-saving program that will get costs down so that we can afford to reform the health system. And if the ‚ÄĒ if these ideas can fit in with those principles, then we'll consider them. And if we go through and they don't, then he won't consider them."

    http://www.newsmax.com/headlines/obama_health_care_tax/2009/03/16/192352.html

And before DarrylS whines about the source, it's an exact quote so DarrylS - shove it.

    Read and puke.
