I'm glad the righties are calling it socialism. It's working and people are getting more optimistic and remain very positive about Obama. With the continued help of the righties, people will come to understand new socialism as something good, and will come to realize that the rightie scare tactics as absurd. We're still free, just as we were under socialists like Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Johnson.

Give me an example of a President who cut taxes more than he increased spending and you would have a piece of evidence that it's cutting taxes, not spending, that aids the economy. Certainly Reagan and Bush propped up the economy by pumping hundreds of billions into the economy (and deficit spending). Roosevelt was by no rational measure a failure, except that it took WWII for him to spend the kind of of money needed to truly end the Great Depression. Johnson was a failure in terms of Vietnam, but passing the Civil Rights and Voting acts were successes of historic proportion, the kind of success that no Republican has had. His Great Society was a well-conceived, ill-executed program, that nonetheless has done enormous good. From my general knowledge of history, I would contend that the growth of the black middle class over the last 45 years was fairly similar to the growth of the Irish middle class starting in 1890, at a time when our country did not help immigrants.

    Roosevelt's economy was a failure???
What makes you say that? Did you ever hear of WWII? I'll give you Johnson, whose entire presidency was a failure except for the Civil Rights progress. You can't assess Kennedy's presidency fully. How'd Clinton do? You know full well that economic forces react and flow through one presidency to the next.

Your silly article rants about a "New Socialism" as if socialism in America was actually new. It's been going on since Roosevelt. Stop pretending 100 days into the Obama Presidency that Obama is the source of some new movement that we've never seen before. The article is fluff and so is your thread. F-

I tried to read that article but it's just such nonsense:

What is being done is so far removed from socialism it's not even funny. You guys will call anything other than a perfectly free market socialism. Just another attack canard. :ugh:

Just wait until Obama blows it and finds a health care solution tied to ... insurance rather than nationalization. :(

I'm just addressing all the topics you incessantly need to bash Obama on, on a rotating basis. All of which have little or no basis in fact.

So I go to this link, and the byline at the stop says "Discover, Experience, Examine, THE WORD OF GOD AND THE SHAPING OF AMERICA."

In the website header, I see an ad for the NRA.

There's another ad with angry people asking "Wheree's OUR Bail-Out".

And another ad about profiting in "The 'Bushama' Depression of 2009".

    Didn't bother eading the article.

It would be awesome if you actually did talk about policy instead of the inane photo-op flap.

Fair enough. What the guy calls socialism isn't related to socialism in the least. Get back to me when we nationalize Exxon/Mobil and then we'll start talking.

I think it's a stupid article. Consider this sentence: "Their 'New Socialism' doesn’t need to capture property. It is content to control the economy through taxation and regulation and the attitudes of our citizens by the establishment of a culture through the power institutions of our society: the media, the education establishment, and powerful business interests. Moreover, the 'New Socialism' seeks to create a conventional wisdom that discredits all alternative thought." What in the world is new about that? And what exactly is socialist about it? Both parties do the same thing: they use a combination of taxes, spending, and regulation to control the economy and they use the Presidency as a bully pulpit to control attitudes--such as by trying to convince people that Obama is somehow a scary socialist. Thus, premise of of the essay is shallow.

Obama is spending like Bush and Reagan did, only Obama is spending even more than they did and has a different set of priorities on what to spend on. The Republicans were all fine with massive deficit spending, nonbid program, and even billions of missing dollars as long as it was spent on their favorite government programs -- homeland security, military, war, and so on. But then again, maybe the Republicans are New Socialists, too, which would be great news.

The author talks of the "broad expansion of the welfare state," and in phrase seems to say we're already a welfare state. Thus, New Socialism isn't new after all. It's another step in what we already have -- a society with a system of government that tries to lift up people when they're down rather than stomp on them.

His other points are the same old tired ideas in the same old battle between conservatives and liberals.

Obama is bringing forth a Kennedy liberalism -- one that is ambitious and bold. But it's not new. The ideas that Obama is pushing have been on the table for years, and would have been implemented a long time ago if it wasn't for the Reagan Revulsion.
