I wonder how much it would cost to net him in FA. I love Rodney as much as the next guy, but the prospect of Atogwe and Merriweather holding down the FS/SS positions in '09 is enough to make me feel tingly all over.

    No Jersey Selected

Is he a hitter? If we're going to replace Rodney, we're going to need to replace him with someone who will punish receivers and make them fear coming over the middle. I checked his stats and he had a pretty solid amount of tackles this year with six INTs.

I think he would be exactly the ball hawk this defense needs. Whether or not the Pats can sign him is the big question, he's the top FA safety available and will surely draw a lot attention. Here's an article I wrote for bleacher report about why the Pats need him...

Atogwe and Meriweather would combine for 10 picks a season in this scheme.

If Meri can add 10-15lbs and play in that 220-230 range without losing his speed and agility, that would be the best safety tandem in the NFL for 5 years.

Atogwe happens to be my #1 FA target. Here's my post from this thread:

    ---
Good article. The fact the Pats showed interest in him pre-draft, combined with the following excerpt, may hopefully make him a very secret target for BB:

I asked Reiss what he thought of Sanders/Atogwe, here's what he replied...

The Pats usually don't outbid anyone. But $$$ is not the primary reason Atogwe would sign with us. A winning tradition, being BB coached, and the opportunity to pair up with a good young Safety named Meriweather, are all sound reasons to arrive on the Pats threshold.

Right now Brandon's on the scant side of 200 lbs., and at 5'10.5" I can't imagine where he'd put the 220-230! To quote the master, he is what he is. But yes, if he stays at SS he and Atogwe would make a nice tandem.

He makes a lot of highlights plays, but he sucks.

Think of antrell rolle, small, great with the ball in his hands, but gets picked on all the time.

James sanders is better than this bum

    Is that you James Sanders?

Honestly I don't know much about Atogwe except that he makes a lot of picks.

He is the ONLY high priced FA or trade, that I would consider.

Check out who is second in the NFL last season in forced fumbles....it was Atogwe at 6 one behind Harrison of Pittsburgh. That was to go along with his 77 solo tackles, 5 ints and 10 pass break ups and a TD to boot. He was named as their team MVP so I bet they hang on to him if they can:(.

Ballhawking is great, but in this system, the SS has to do 3 things:run blitz, pass blitz, and cover TE's over the middle. EX: see Rodney Harrison. Any talk of adding a safety has to mentally stand him up along side of Rodney, and see if he stands a chance of getting there. Guys that are too slow, short, or light will never make it no matter their instincts. EX: see Bob Sanders. Guy averages 6 games a yr. He's injured the rest of the time. '07 he was on the bench for 6 games, came back to play us, went back to the bench til the playoffs.

Don't know this Otogwe but if he isn't at least 6' and 220, we don't need another FS. Merriweather is our FS, not our SS.
