Number of coaches hired by NFL teams since Bill Belichick was hired is disturbing

When you think about Belichick the first thing that come to mind are all the attributes and coaching skills he has, but the thing that I really like most about him is he doesn’t indulge in the nonsense and egotistical behaviors like the upper echelon coaches of the past – Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Ditka, Mike Shanahan and others who go in and out of retirement and leave the organizations they work for in a state of uncertainty at the end of each season in order to hear how badly they are wanted, blah, blah ego stoking nonsense.

Belichick is here every year, I hardly if ever here him discuss himself and I have never seen him stand at a podium and say “I am going to relax and think things over for a few weeks” basically he doesn’t do a Brett Favre, he isn’t above the big picture in his mind. That is why players come here for less money; that is why we have consistency and continuity in our organization which allows us to overcome endless adversity. I have a 3 year old son and if I could point to one man and say that is a guy that sees things through and does what he came to do it would Belichick, in my mind it is not a question whether Belichick is the best coach in NFL history, or even if he is the best coach in the history of all 4 of the major pro sports in the United States (I don’t know much about outside of the US) that in my mind is a decisive yes, I wonder if the guy is mortal.

Since 2000 when the Patriots hired Belichick the other 31 teams have used 136 different head coaches and interim head coaches, an average of 4.4 per team over 14 seasons. That number is going to grow by at least 6 this offseason and likely more.

Was it during the first Super Bowl appearance that BB insisted on introducing the team as a whole--and ended up breaking the old precedent of introducing the starting offense.

I think he was offered a defense introduction, but he stuck to his ground and won the day. Some called him a true patriot and others called him a socialist.

In any case, he put that TEAM FIRST concept on the map that day, and NEVER LOOKED BACK.

Belichick is MORE than a Head Coach. He isa Football Executive who organizes and run a Football Program. He hires and trains his College and Pro scouts. He generally hires young unknowns Coaches, and lets them grow under his guidance.

He sets a Football Program budget and through thrifty negotiations maintains enough CAP room to build a 65 man roster of various talents. When talent desires more money then he believes the position can afford, he lets it walk and finds others.

His personnel standards are high. He seeks leaders, and smart upstanding individuals, whenever possible. He runs a tight ship and doesn't consider anybody irreplaceable.

I think it's more of what I like to call the holy trinity. Yes we are lucky to have BB, but he is also lucky to have Brady (not just his talent, but his consistent competitiveness and fire over the years), and an owner who is pretty much hands off and demonstrates full trust in his coach. And each of those is lucky to have the other two.

And yes we should feel so fortunate that we've had this for almost 14 years. If I may be so bold as to say, no other sports franchise could demonstrate this kind of winning consistency over so long a period as we have done.

I always thought this was a "player" thing and not a "coach" thing. I don't recall Belichick making that decision.

You're correct. The first time it occurred it was more happenstance than anything else and then the team just kept rolling with it throughout the season. But it was definitely a players' decision.

Brady loves his job but Belichick is his job. He is a football historian, he is literally involved in every aspect of the team, he is a freak man the guy embodies football, his friends, his children all are involved in football and for that matter are all expected to contribute to the success of this team.

Part of the reason Goodell hates Belichick in my opinion is because he is doesn’t like the influence Bill has across the entire NFL and even in college football. His coaching tree links to basically 75% of the organization. It is actually funny because you see Schwartz and Schiano both who have strong ties to Belichick get fired and you read down one paragraph and top candidates for HC vacancies are O’Brien and McDaniels.
