I wonder how many centimeters the oceans will rise if this comes to pass? I'm sure the left will blame it on Bush anyway.

Supernova may wipe out the Earth | The Sun |News

A STAR primed to explode in a blast that could wipe out the Earth was revealed by astronomers yesterday.

It will self-destruct in an explosion called a supernova with the force of 20 billion billion billion megatons of TNT.

New studies show the star, called T Pyxidis, is much closer than previously thought at 3,260 light-years away - a short hop in galactic terms.

Sometimes it's hard to accept or realize how fragile our lives are. It's better to be stuck enjoying what you have than fear what might happen.

In the cosmic scope of things..... I am not that important!

If it happens ... we won't be talking about it here or anywhere ... so C'est la vie.

I find it interesting that global warming deniers are quite willing to accept the destruction of the Earth by way of an invisible man in the sky; but refuse to even consider the possibility that man-made pollution could have any sort of negative effect.

BTW, thanks Wolfpack for the scientific news from the "perfessors" at the London Sun (What? Sarah Palin's Minister hasn't weighed in on it yet?).

Popular Science will shed some actual information on the matter:

Nearby T Pyxidis Supernova Could Destroy Life on Earth | Popular Science

"But the fantastic scale of the cosmos that allows such massive, cataclysmic events to unravel also bears a silver lining for those of us on Earth (2012 believers, stop reading now). Though in terms of star life supernova is likely around the cosmic corner, it's estimated to happen MANY MILLIONS OF EARTH YEARS [emphasis mine] from now, a full 10 million years by some estimates. Suffice it to say that we're far enough from T Pyxidis that we can't really tell exactly how big it is or how quickly it's accreting mass."

So, no folks, it's not time to start sniffing glue, gorging Twinkies, bonking sheep and racing Humvees down 1-95. Playing Homer Simpson will have to wait.

It is that serenity thing, God grant me the courage to know the things I can change, the things I can't and the wisdom to know the difference...

Man made pollution can and does have all sorts of negative effects, instead politicians and people who don't understand science are worried about a trace gas that is essential to life, and is what plants breathe. Go figure.

In 10 million years, thanks to the global warming deniers, humans will have evolved to live in molten lava conditions, and the anti-alien space shields built by Republican administrations thousands of years earlier will finally have proven to be a good idea. In other words, everything will work out okay.
