In RI we have had a two year controversy over our Christmas/Holiday Tree in the State House rotunda... so much so it has even garnered the attention of Bill O'Reilly who got a smackdown the other night.

The reality is that there are arguments on both sides of the issue, and I for one do not care.. it does provide fodder for the talk shows though and the news outlets... The roving reporter wants to know, what do you think??

    Who gives a flying f....

do gooders sticking their noses into traditions as benign as festive decorating and Santa at Christmas under the guise that it indoctrinates is paranoid and arrogant......"warned teachers"...warned??? Why are these people so concerned over possibly offending an extreme minority while they ignore the vast majority who are offended with their intolerance?

whether you call a tree a Christmas tree or a Holiday tree is one thing, but banning them all together under any name is a whole new level

There are concerns about the source, "The Patch", which is a locally edited newspaper... none of the sources are cited...

There seems to be a tendency towards hyperbole, kids are taught about Ramadan and Kwanza??? Some of these battles take place in people's minds, the comparison to Black Friday makes no sense.. even though she qualifies it as being facetious..

Without regard, I celebrate Christmas my way and do not really care how others celebrate theirs...

I think we have to keep things in check, and I think that if a parent doesn't want her child exposed to religious propaganda, it's a conversation worth having. I suppose religion is like pornography, in a sense, that it's really defined by community standards. In the example of Charlie Brown Christmas, the school handled it appropriately by saying that "any child who wished not to go could be exempt from attending." Personally, I think any parent who would object to such an outing is as ridiculous as the parent who thinks that Creationism should be taught in public school. But, these are conversations worth having because there are some valid issues involved.

My culture's not Christianity. I don't hate anybody's culture, blah blah blah, I just don't need the state promoting it.

As far as "hating our constitution" you should really think a little more before you post. Our constitution was very clear on banning the establishment of a state religion, and the Founders' other documents were very clear on the intent: separation between church and state.

This annual bullcrap-fest never was worth the time, and I'm not going to waste it this morning. Maybe later, if I'm bored.

Just indoctrinate your young in your church like God intended, why dontcha.

I am non-religious, but I celebrate Xmas. I enjoy the food, the gifts, the music, and the overall entertainment value.

I have decoupled religion from Xmas and it works for me.

My kids will celebrate Xmas too, it is going to be a lot of fun. Why not just morph the holiday into something that works for your family?

the whole promoting religion thing is concerning, but as a parent, you can make of it what you will.

Absolutely - the secular can just enjoy the foods, non-religious traditions, etc., at home or in non-state spaces... the religious can enjoy the season in church... the malls and stores and whatnot can continue to sell us whatever they can with displays of festive ribbons and ornaments, etc.

Just keep Christmas religious, commercial, etc. Just keep it out of the schools and off the courthouse steps and I'm happy.

I gotta go get some coffee.

I gave up on Organized Religion 70 years ago, the only time I will step foot in a church is for a wedding or a funeral.

Liberal Left Wing Haters that want to get rid of Xmas and Santa should ignore Xmas, they should keep their mouths shut and go sking that should get them away from all of that "Jesus Shlt"

Ahh, the annual War on Xmas (<- see what I did there?) thread. I'll say it again; separation of church and state is an important part of our American heritage, but I personally don't care if Christmas is everywhere. It's a major Christian holiday and the country is still majority Christian and/or Christian in its cultural leanings. I don't care if they've got a display with a Menorah or a Dreidel (like they do at the local Hartford area mall); in fact, I'm sure it's forced political correctness, which I'm against.

I'll leave the "war" to other people and enjoy my minor Jewish holiday when it comes around. :confused2:

Harry, let's just say you are right about the "liberal left wing Haters". We all agree and they are abolished. Think what schools would look like without that opposition (hint: you gave up organized religion).

Public schools are not the place for politics unless you're a lefty. Then it can be as one-sided politically as anything in our lives. If some of you people knew what they're passing off as "education" now you'd be amazed.

Once again, for the Constitutionally impaired folks among us, it's freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion, and if you don't give a f*** then why whine about it or force your views onto somebody else?

Some of you, here and in the media, consistently show that you support the religious freedoms of a Muslim terrorist sitting in a military prison but get offended when it's one of your Christian neighbors. I wouldn't mind an explanation.

Starting a discussion with such a faulty premise will lead nowhere. Public schools are clearly not a two way street politically, and the only people without opposition are the lefties. Force feeding every kid Al Gore's propaganda film on Global Whatever-It's-Called-Now should have removed any doubt about that.

Why is this country so darn obsessed with not hurting anyone's "feelings"?

Pretty soon, you'll prolly see school uniforms return so the wealthier kids won't stand out with their nicer clothes.

But I think we need to band together and stop this trend from growing any further.

If a child feels "less than" for not having nice clothes, it's ok....OK? It's actually their fault if they feel less than. Clothes mean nothing!

Jeesh, toughen up people! We don't all deserve the same and we'll never all have the same. The sooner kids accept that, the better off they'll be.

It's fine to shlt all over Jesus Christ and his father God but boy oh boy don't you dare speak badly of "Islam and Muhammad" nothing drives a Liberal Jesus Hater nuttier than insulting the Muslims.

Right after 9/11 the Left Wing NY Times refused to call The Muslim Killers "terrorists" they said we all should call them "hijackers"

It has been said that following Saddam's death there were some at the NY Times that wanted The NY Times Flag flown at "half mast"
