Here's one to put Sunday's game into perspective:

Since the NFL-AFL merger, there have been 80 games in which one team had a 21-point lead after the first quarter.

The Patriots are the FIRST team in NFL history to trail by 21+ points after one quarter and win the game by double digits.

That's pretty crazy. But what's even crazier is they won by 28 points! Double digits can be as low as 11. But 28! I don't think that will ever, ever happen again.

But that's my point . . . not only did they end up +28, but the previous best was +8.

The whole team is so calm and collective. Having come back from 17 down and 21 down the past two weeks will go a long way in their confidence. If they trail in the playoffs there will be no sense of panic by anyone. Last year it felt like our offense was panicked during the Jets. I just don't see us losing that way this year....If we lose at all ;)

Actually I think it could be as low as 10.

    No Jersey Selected

Great stats. I feel like it's almost flown under the radar that the Pats SCORED 49 STRAIGHT POINTS in that game. Just unreal.

    Nope... follow along.

Either zero is a digit or not a digit. (only two possiblities)

If zero is a digit, then 01 is double digits. And the lowest double digit number is 1.

But if you contend that zero is not a digit then 10 can't be double digits either and the lowest double digit number is 11.

Therefore 10 is NOT the lowest double digit number, either way.

Zero is a digit, but scientists do not count initial zeros as digits (except zero itself). The smallest double-digit number is 10.

You just got me thinking about something that has pissed me off the past week. All the mediots are using that 21 point outburst as a perfect example of why this defense will be the fatal flaw for the Pats this playoffs, while they simply ignore the 3/4's of shut out ball that followed. Its like they are saying that the defense was just as bad as in the first quarter, but some "anomalous factor" kept points off the board.

I can't wait for Pittsburgh to get on their their bye week and get here.

I know that. But you have to admit that is a novel way to prove that 10 is not the lowest 2 digit number.

I can also prove that 1 = 2. But if I did you would probably just complain that I divided by zero.

I'm bored. What can you do with octal and hex? :D

Pet peeve: sports announcers who say "the score is now in single digits"...

Having a double digit lead in binary doesn't mean much.

Watching the first quarter felt downright odd. I never thought the Patriots would lose the game, even down 21-0. I felt they were not intimidated by the Buffalo touchdowns, just annoyed. What happened after that just didn't seem surprising. I don't know why. It should have. But it just seemed like the natural progression of the game, which there was no real chance of losing.

I am going to make up my own unproven stat that 49 is the most unanswered points in any game where the opponent actually scored.

and if my above stat proves to be wrong than I will take it a step further and say that 49 is the most unanswered points in any game where the opponent actually scored double digits.

    In hex:

    January 1, 7DC

The New England Patriots thrashed the Buffalo Bills 31 to 15. Mr. Reliable #C, Tom Brady, passed for 17 of 23 for 152 yards passing and 3 TDs. All was not smooth though as the Buffalo Bills went up E-0 in the first quarter and 15-0 before the Patriots scored 31 unanswered points. A key play in the game came in the 4th quarter with the Patriots at their 8th yard line on 1st and A. Hoyer threw a 16 yard pass to Gronkowski giving him the most passing yards in a season by a TE in NFL history with 581 yards.

For the record, In octal, Pats beat them even more impressively 61 to 25. In Binary, Pats won 110001 to 10101.

Speaking of hex, I predict that the patriots will win the Superbowl over New Orleans 2D to 1F.

By yards, the Pats had the second best #1 receiver (Welker behind CJ), best #2 (Gronk), best #3 (Hernandez), and best #4 (Branch).

By sacks, the Pats had the second best #2 pass rusher (Anderson and Carter tied with 10, both behind the Eagles' Babin and Cole) and the best #3 pass rusher (Ninkovich, whose 6.5 just edged out the 6 of fellow #3s Seymour and Odrick).

I'm a cross country runner, so if you know how cross country scoring works, you'll understand why I'm comparing #1s to #1s, #2s to #2s, and so on.

But enough with my running bias. Here are some more:

Anderson and Carter tied for the AFC DL lead in sacks with 10. Dumervil and Mathis each had 9.5. Only Philly (Babin and Cole) also had two players with double-digit sacks. 17 teams had nobody with double-digit sacks.

Three players had at least 6 sacks and at least 2 interceptions. They are Suggs (14, 2), Matthews (6, 3), and Ninkovich (6.5, 2).

Arrington tied for the NFL lead with 7 picks. Of the 10 players with 5 or more, he's the youngest.

The Pats had 4 of the 57 receivers to break 700 yards.

Just want to highlight this. For all the fan angst about the Patriots wide receiver situation, Deion had 51 receptions for 702 yards as their FOURTH best receiver despite being injured down the stretch. If he can rest up and get healthy for the playoffs, they're loaded.
