    There is a school of painting going back about 40-50 years, Photorealism -- some amazing artists.

    One of the hateful things about the computer age is that a lot of the effects that took a real, mindbendingly good artist to do, were suddenly something a shmuck like me could do on the desktop. The 3D graphics programs do an excellent job of the mirrored sphere stuff.

    The whole school of photorealism just blows my mind. I cannot conceive of being able to capture reality like that with a brush and acrylics (or oils, or anything else)

    Meanwhile some other guy paints a black square & that's the one on the cutting edge. Okay, was in 1970 anyway.

    Those are great examples of photorealism.

    I was just talking with someone about the glass flowers on permanent display at Harvard's Peabody Museum. I don't think they'd be called photorealistic because they're 3 dimensional, but they're every bit as amazing and beautiful as those photos.
