Very nice article, he seems like a kid with a good upbringing from his demeanor and way he carries himself.

BTW did anyone else think the college coach who made the comment to Wes' mom about the Cowboys was a bit of a... for lack of a better word, JERK?

    Amazing article.

I would say Welker has had as hard, if not an even tougher, road than Brady to get where he is.

He is a little guy with a TON of will and guts.

A consummate patriot?? Remember after they signed him he started showing up with the guys playing softball and a lot of charity events, had good feeling then as he wanted to become part of the team and this culture.

great article, thanks. I didn't know all that much about his background.

I loved this part of the article:

"It's overwhelming,” said Shelley, who's had her share of happy tears this season. "What a dream for a kid. Every man would probably say, ‘I would love to play in the NFL.'”

"Let alone for the New England Patriots,” Leland said.

I know there have been many threads about this, but I still can't believe, after following Boston sports for 40 years, that one of my teams is THE GOLD STANDARD!!!!!!!

I see your point, but it really depends on how he said it. I've coached a bit in the past, not nearly at the level of big time college football, but its not easy making a value judgment on a kid, when it means he can't make the team, and the mom doesn't agree.

Platinum, for those that think it's better. Gold is fine with me though. The way Welker and Moss came in and contributed right away, I think they hit their playbooks pretty hard, like the article says Welker did his Chargers playbook. Thanks Chargers. Thanks Dolphins. Thanks Wes Welker and his family.

BTW--for those of you who've seen his most recent press conference--is it just me, or are Josh McDaniels and Welker ever so slowly metamorphosing into BB clones? :)

In that piece where Wes said he didn't know what Stallworth was talking about (that he, Wes was asked to play QB) I don't think he said you know once! Attababy Wes.

yeah you're right. i guess if i was in the situation, i would just try to say no with as much tact as possible, especially seeing how emotional they were all about it. if they're being rude to me about it, that's another story.

What?? Welker never chewed off any testicles??!! Not even a stray tomcat? Couldn't the writer have been a little more insightful and made up something macho like a bloody oral castration of the last OK prairie dog so we could out do the Giant's back up center?!??!! Oh, the media.......

Another great article on Welker: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs07/news/story?id=3214646

A lot more stories about how he grew up, and a few more tidbits about his NFL career.

    I love this part:
