Bah, it's just for depth purposes. One can never have too much depth. Spicer used to be a pretty good D-Lineman. Here, he would obviously be a second string/situational kind of guy.

Then what was the point of the whole "youth movement" if you're just going to cut them and bring in more guys in their mid-30s?

Who got cut? Try reading my post again. His addition is for depth purposes. Depth being either situational football (which is the least likely) or as an insurance policy in case injuries take their toll on the D-Line at some point this season (which is the most likely). This is even assuming he makes the team.

If by "depth" you mean they're bringing them in as "shadow roster" players, sure. But if you mean that you expect them to get signed, then my point remains.

You do realize that the Shadow Roster is a non-existant roster of players who aren't getting paid but are on call by the team to come back if injuries happen only because they are Patriots to the core right? Junior Seau says hi. Spicer would not try out to be on the Shadow Roster.

And if you don't want him for depth purposes, please fill us in on who is out there still that would add good depth to the D-Line.

Re: NFP: Paul Spicer tries out for Pats.

I think what he is saying is that if you want him for depth someone else has to be cut but it what he is missing is that one guy at the bottom of the roster isn't going to mess up the youth movement.

What I find interesting about some of the visits other than Brooks they seem to be dlinemen which leads me to two thoughts 1 they are just trying to replace or keep the emergency list up to date at the position they just traded (Seymour) or 2 the back up plan for further injury to LB would be to actually have Tully and/or Burgess move to OLB and again would need more DL depth to do so.

If I had to guess, I'd guess at option #2--would make sense IMO

Maybe evil Belichick, Dark Lord of the Sith, brought him in just to humiliate him and send him away? The bastid!

This is business as usual for the Patriots. They bring guys in and try them out ALL THE TIME, just keeping their ducks in a row and files updated. Nothin' to see here, move it along...

The Patriots have 6 defensive linemen on their roster plus 3

on their practice squad. They have only Guyton and Alexander

(Thomas if he was switched) to play middle linebacker but have

yet to audition a linebacker. Maybe, the trade of Wilfork to Denver

for a 2012 #1 draft pick is almost complete and they need another

    defensive lineman to replace Vince.
